Cant See A Scenario Where the Leafs Keep Johnsson

Created by: Leafs_and_Sens_Fan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2020
Published: Aug. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the emergence of Robertson as a solid 3rd line winger who will continue to improve I can't see a scenario where the Leafs keep Johnsson unless they move out one of the big 4 or Mikheyev gets an offersheet that Toronto can't match.

Have you watched Marner play this playoffs? It’s been unbearable how badly he’s hurting the team. At least Johnsson forechecks & drives to the net. Plus can skate quickly.

They won't trade Marner, they spent almost all of last off season trying to get him on contract. If they traded him all that work would go down the drain.

I dont see a strong market for these types of players. Contending teams dont have the cap space to fit AJ in at 3.4 x 3 and rebuilding teams would rather have the draft capital. Paying bottom 6 guys on a contending team is going to be tough (and yes he is a third line player on a cup contending team).

Like him as a player it's just a tough set of circumstances trying to move dollars in a flat cap.

He is not a bottom-6 player tho. He is fully capable 2nd/3rd line winger who is cost controlled. I believe teams would see players like that and go for them since cap hit value of those players in free agency would be 2 or 2+ million higher than what Johnsson makes. He is the guy you trade 2nd round pick for and becomes 2nd line playmaker/scorer for you.

Look at Johnsson's advanced stats away from Matthews, JT and flanking him Nylander or Marner and they are simply bad. Johnsson is simply a product of his linemates and that product is still only 15 goals and 40 points (what he was on pace for this season). Now couple that with a pretty bad knee injury (assuming ACL or MCL tear) coming back from that is not easy and if there is moderate or worse cartilage damage as well, it is unlikely he will ever be 100%. So those two factors and then top it off with a $3.4M cap hit....no he's not worth more then a 3rd round pick. Leafs may even have to retain on him just to move him for a 3rd rounder.

If the Canes could find a way to move Dzingel and Nino (unlikely), I would get Johnsson for Buffalo’s third. Put him in Trocheck and Necas’ line

Also, he only managed 3 even strength goals this past season, playing with elite talent, and is only 5" 10. Not exactly what you are looking for in a top 6 winger. Toronto needs to cut cap somewhere to become compliant for next year and all teams know that, so that further reduces his value.

With a flat cap, a guy who can score 20 goals and offer a lot of good qualities for under 4 million is a good commodity. Teams that need scoring will like his contract

he was actually fine in game 2, and even if he was awful in both games that is a stupid reason to trade him.

Part of that production is a function of the forwards he plays with in Toronto. How many teams need left shot wingers(easily the most abundant position in the nhl), have the cap, arent rebuilding (would rather have the picks), and can not attract lw free agents to round out their line up.

I have a tough time coming up with viable trading partners.

If hes such a bargain why doesn't Toronto just keep him. After you answer think about how many competing teams have the same issues and dilemas.

A 3rd and a minor piece is about as much as leafs fans should expect.

He is bottom six on a competing team.

He doesn't crack the top six in calgary who is at best a fringe contender. Dont tell me how he is better than A Mag.

Players like johnson are not 5.4 million in FA. I think because of the flat cap teams will get great value on short term contracts for bottom six players.

What competing teams does he enter the top six and the team would be willing to pay more than a third.

If a team is rebuilding they aren't parting with high draft capital for AJ.

Just wait and see. Someone will pay up in the offseason. It doesn't have to necessarily be exactly that either. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a prospect or two with picks or any combination of the two, but the value will be close.

Alright, I admit, he did fine in game 2 & looked like his old self in game 3. But we’ve seen him play like this far too little, which is why I think they need to trade him no matter what. I’m not the only Leaf fan who thinks like this, as Gordon Bombay agrees:

Quoting: Gordon_Bombay
I’d much rather trade Marner than any other player on the Leafs this offseason. The guy is a waste of space on the ice. He doesn’t give any effort and kills any momentum the team generates. Funny thing is, no one complains since he’s a local boy. In all honesty, he is a pure product of his linemates and doesn’t have any individual ability. In London, he rode on Tkachuk and Dvorak’s coattails and now he’s riding on Matthews. Yet he still had the courage to ask for 11 Million. SMH.
