Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Donato, Ryan
  2. Foligno, Marcus
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Buffalo really could use Foligno back, and although Johnasson may be the better veteran forward in this deal, Foligno fills a need with his leadership, penalty killing, and toughness and slides right into the third line. Buffalo needs to improve the pk and Foligno has developed into one of the better two way forwards in the league and a strong pk presence.

Donato provides the Sabres with a similar prospect to Mittelstadt, but is a winger. Donato is a little more established than Mitts at the NHL level and could do more with a bigger role and with Kirill Kapriziov in the fold, his role could be diminished in Minnesota
MIN
  1. Johansson, Marcus
  2. Mittelstadt, Casey
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
The thinking here is, I don't think Minnesota is going to be able to trade for the franchise center they are looking for, and they will still like to improve their depth down the middle. Mittelstadt is a player who needs a change of scenery and going home to Minnesota where he will be needed will be the perfect situation for him as opposed to being rushed into a second line center role after moving Ryan O'Reilly.

He still has top six center upside with superstar potential. BUT, with Cozens on the way, and the possiblity that Buffalo will sign or trade for a center in the offseason, AND the possibility that the Sabres could take another center in the draft, Mittelstadt's path to the NHL will not be easy.

Johansson provides an extremely versatile option who can play all over the top nine, and can fill in as a middle six center if needed, and if the season next year goes south, he can be flipped at the deadline for a pick. Johansson is not an ideal second line center, but he can do it if needed, he can probably be a better 3C, as well as a winger who can play both sides on any of the top three lines.
2.
BUF
  1. Allard, Frédéric
  2. Watson, Austin
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (NJD)
  4. 2020 5th round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Watson improves the team's toughness in the bottom six and helps the penalty kill. Allard provides a young organizational depth on the right side, and will help Rochester. In a year or two, he could be a solid NHL defenseman.
NSH
  1. Ristolainen, Rasmus
Additional Details:
Nashville solidifies their top four and needs to improve their PP scoring. Nashville acquires one of the top PP defenseman in the league, and Ristolainen will help with the development of Fabbro who had many growing pains this seasons.
3.
BUF
  1. Anisimov, Artem ($750,000 retained)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (OTT)

Mittelstadt can be really dynamic at times. I mean sure he may have more competition at C next season but it seems to me that he could probably be made into a winger rather than trade him.

What's the OTT piece coming to NSH in the 3 way deal, or are you just flipping the 2nd round pick? I'm not convinced we need Risto either. Sure we need PP help, but why not do that through a middle 6 wing? We're running 4F-1D PP on both lines.

No we shouldn't. We shouldn't even be trading him for that return

Mitts is an extremely dynamic player, just doesn't do it at the pro level yet. He would do well in the NHL with 2 skilled linemates, one of which is very good defensively and the other who can score goals.

This roster looks good. I'm all for drafting Lundell if he can step in right away as a 4th line player who can produce

Probably not a deal to be made here then. I can't see NSH including the 2nd, without significant retention on Risto.

Something around Risto for Turris could happen

Possibly as part of a bigger deal between the two teams, but I don't really like the idea of bringing Risto to NSH in the first place to be honest. I get that Turris doesn't have the easiest contract for a lot of teams to take on, but one year of a 3rd pair defenseman (two, if Seattle doesn't want him) and $600 000 saved against the cap isn't much of a return.

If it gets the deal done, It's very doable and I think it's a fair return..... realistically because of the expansion draft, he will be a long term rental unless he peforms exceptionally well in Nashville that they want to keep him to the point where they work a deal out with Seattle.

He would have to be a right wing if we did that since left wing is pretty set for a few years with Skinner and Olafsson not going anywhere, unless Skinner moves to RW which he can play. And if Buffalo doesn't take another center, then I think they target someone like Alex Holtz

But, thats why I sent him to Minnesota here. They have an underutilized similar prospect in Ryan Donato who was a highly touted prospect who was once a top fifteen prospect in hockey, just like Mittelstadt who was at one point a top three prospect in all of hockey. Buffalo can use Donato who can play both wings, and Minnesota can use Mittelstadt who can play center. Both these players could use a change of scenery. They have the organizational need, and next season, they will only have Staal and Eriksson-Ek down the middle under contract. So there will be a pretty big opportunity for Mittelstadt to go there and make the Wild and then Johansson of course, is a capable centerman, especially with better wingers, he's just not ideal for the second line, he's more ideal for a third line center role like he was in Washington if he plays down the middle, but he can play the second line in a pinch. But he provides the versatility all over the lineup. Both players would improve their center depth.
LumberJacques liked this.
