David Savard

Created by: Leafs_and_Sens_Fan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2020
Published: Aug. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
David Savard is a very good player. I after watching him play in this series I think he'd actually be more useful to the Leafs than Seth Jones.

Only concern about him is shot blocking defencemen often don't last as long due to injuries.

Savard is a rental. If they're getting Dermott they aren't getting a high pick.

Savard is very durable. We are not trading him unless a 2C is coming back the other way. Period.

You expect a 2C for a 1 year rental?

Any team that trades for him is going to want to extend him. So the likelihood is sign and trade or something like that.

You're not getting a solid 2C for that price. Maybe a borderline 2C like Tierney (not from Ottawa though).

You're more likely to get picks for him.

Are you kidding me? This is a ridiculous trade for a whole host of reasons. No way the Leafs would ever offer this up, regardless of how bad they play defensively.

And the Leafs rebuild will then continue. Did you know it has been going on since 1967? Up 3-0 and can't hold it means the team desperately needs some defenders...

Overpaying for Savard doesn't cancel any of that out or stop any of that from happening. The Leafs need some major changes, and that doesn't, or rather, shouldn't, include David Savard.

Dermott is a massive downgrade. No way in hell CBJ does his. Savard costs at least a 1st .

Hard to make major changes when the top 4 forwards eat 40.49M of your 81.5M capped team.

In fact all your forwards (currently healthy) add up to $50,689,366. Add in your top 2 d-men and that's another 10.625M. The goalie and the backup another 6.65M. Throw in Rasmus Sandin & Timothy Liljegren for 1.7575M and you have 11.778M left for 9 guys. Holl takes 2M of that and Andreas Johnsson takes another 3.4M. That leaves 6.378M for 7 guys.

So it's either: trade for a LTIR contract which will cost a high draft pick, pray someone that gets bought out will sign for very little (like Shattenkirk in Tampa), or trade for retained salary. All while missing your 1st and this year and another 1st in one of the next 2 years.

Major changes must mean one of Marner or Nylander to be traded...(Tavares signed to come home can't trade him. Matthews not even up for discussion)....and what team has cap space and will give you appropriate value to add those cap hits in a flat cap world for the next 3 years? I don't see how major changes happen please enlighten me.

I agree with both of you. IF Savard is traded with an extension in mind then we should be adding something for a 2C. pure rental though? just picks

I cant see a team giving a 2C for him. Any team that trades for him will be a contender. How many contending teams have a spare 2C sitting around?

I mean the Leafs used to have Kadri but I don't know any current teams that have a spare 2C.

I guess we'll just end up keeping him, then. He's been kind of a warrior for us, after all.
