Three Way Trade

Created by: Claesson4Norris
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 7, 2020
Published: Aug. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TBL:
In: Logan Brown, NYI 1st (2020), WPG 3rd (2020).
Out: Anthony Cirelli.
Reasoning: Tampa is facing a pretty significant cap crunch, and as an RFA due for a significant raise, Cirelli seems a likely casualty. In this deal they get a skilled NHL ready centre with 2C upside, as well as some quality future assets they can use to replenish the prospect pool, or to facilitate other moves in pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

WPG:
In: Anthony Cirelli, Christian Jaros, NYI 2nd (2020), OTT 3rd (2021).
Out: Nikolaj Ehlers.
Reasoning: After losing in the play in round, the Jets are lucky enough to land the 1st overall pick, and obviously then draft Alexis Lafreniere. This leaves them in the enviable position of being simply "too deep" on the wings, and decide that they could parley that depth to address their most notable weaknesses, primarily the lack of a true 2C, and a less than deep right side D. Jets secure the spot behind Scheifele with a very strong two way C with upside, and a solid Depth RD who could slot in on the 3rd pair or as the 7th D, as well as some draft picks.

OTT:
In: Nikolaj Ehlers.
Out: Logan Brown, Christian Jaros, NYI 1st (2020), NYI 2nd (2020), WPG 3rd (2020), OTT 3rd (2021)
Reasoning: The Sens have done a great job of building a stockpile of prospects and draft picks that few teams could rival. They've done such a thorough job in fact, that they currently have more picks and prospects than could ever possibly play for them. With that in mind, they reach deep into the bag of goodies, and go out in search of something they lack, which is established, young NHL star power. The Sens have young Stars, and they have experienced NHL depth, but what they could truly use is someone who combines both of those things.

I don't see them getting many trade offers that heat that. Compensation on an offersheet they wouldn't be able to match would be a 1st + 3rd, and they're getting a skilled C making league min with 2C upside who can step into the lineup right away.

Wouldn't they just trade Cernak or let him get OS'd and simply let him walk for cap space?

Awesome just hold tryouts for RHD lol cuz they’re not going to be able to afford Shatty and they’ll be left with Foote and probably re-sign Rutta as well.

Serg would play the right side with Hedman

Honestly let Tampa suck for a while. Plus they can’t re-sign Sergachev unless they trade Killorn AND one of Johnson/Palat/Gourde

Cernak alone doesn't give you enough room. The Vasilevsky extension alone makes it tough, and they still have a whole blueline to sign, including Sergachev. They would basically need to move two of Killorn, Palat, Johnson or Gourde, all of whom have have some form of trade/move protection and outside of Killer I don't imagine there will be a huge market for any of those players, and I'm not sure they'd waive to go to teams with the cap space to acquire them.

They're going to be faced with some tough decisions this summer, and if they can trade Cirelli, and they're able to get a skilled forward to replace him at league min, they'd have to jump at it.

Even if Serg plays the off side, the D is still shot to hell unless Rutta and Shattenkirk not only don't get raises, but cut their current salaries in half. Even if you plop Foote immediately into the top 4 ( I'm not sure he's going to be ready for that), you still have the not good Braden Coburn as a full time top 6 D which isn't good, and then you re-sign Bogosian or Schenn, neither of whom are very good either. It gets so thin so fast.
