For Staal Detroit would probably push for the 2020 pick assuming someone jumps past NYR to take the lottery.

Dang, probably needs a sweetener then, that is not even close to a lottery team next year.

Patrick Marleau contract was $6,250,000 and Toronto gave just a 1st round pick to Carolina and no one expects Toronto to not make the playoffs and go deep.

Correct, the cap was not flat when that trade was made and the 2021 draft is considerably weaker than 2020.

Staal cap is weaker "Smaller by 550,000" then Marleau's so it = out.

It's close, I would argue that the scarcity of teams willing and able to take on cap this summer would require more, however I wouldn't be unhappy with the 1st so it's more curiosity regarding any actual deal rather than insisting that the value is different.

Well the pick is also not protected like Toronto was (top 10 protected) knowing that the draft is not as deep as 2020. Its a fair deal and Detroit will have lots of cap space for a 1 year buyout on a rebuilding team.

Marleau was packaged with a first because he had to be bought out that Toronto deal is very unique and shouldn’t be used as a comparable. It costs much less to move a player than it does to get another team to take on dead cap space. This site reallllllly needs to stop using that as a comparable now unless it’s a point per game player everyone expects 1 and 2 nd round picks for any contract over 2 million.

i'm sorry... but in what world are we.. or any team for that matter.. giving Puljujarvi 3.4 mill a season? That's absurd. Like a lot of the other trades, though. Malkin and Panarin would be mind blowing.

I'd do that from Wings POV, 2021 draft class doesn't look as good but things could change, there are always good players available in every draft

@Root There is a lot of histrory between DeAngelo, Tampa and the GM Julien BriseBois (JBB). DeAngelo will never play for Tampa which is a team that is controlled by JBB.

In DeAngelos first year with the Syracuse Crunch in which JBB was the GM he was suspended for a couple games by the league (never explained but thought to be verbal abuse in game) then healthy scratched in over 10 games later that year. The rumor was he had such an attitude that the leadership group of the players asked he be benched, then when he spoke with JBB it did not go well and only got worse which prolonged his benching and quicken up his trade. After that offseason they dumped him to Arizona for the 37th pick which they took Libor Hajek who as we know was traded to the Rangers as well.

I personally think McDonagh will be left exposed in the expansion draft and some incentive given to Seattle to take him since the Lightning need the cap space again next year. Also Sergachev can replace him at 2LD by then. Now Sergachev will have to take a bridge deal to stay in Tampa for this to happen but that is likely as he said he is open to bridge deal to stay with a local beat reporter here in Tampa.

I follow Tb fairly closely. Never heard serg was open to a bridge. Where did you see that? Thanks. Personally I thought he may take an OS for the money and to be a number one defender.

So I am paraphrasing here but he was asked by one of the beat reporters during the hiatus a few months back, pretty sure it was a video and he said he was not worried about his contract and he would let his agent deal with it, he wanted to play and get better but understood the financial aspects has changed due to the coronavirus so he was open to working with the Lightning on any kind of deal once they knew how the cap would end up.

Personally I think he will sign a bridge deal, his best friend is Vasy (you can see them in Tampa all the time together if you know where they like to hang out) and he looks up to Kucherov and they both took bridge deals so I could see him doing something similar.
