Valimaki hasn't exactly played a full season in two years. Sure he's ready to play top-four minutes?

As a NSH fan, I'd rather keep Forsberg. There is a much better chance of him resigning with NSH than Gaudreau I think. And he is basically the heart of the Preds offense -- he's not the guy NSH need to trade. Gaudreau is more gifted offensively I would say, but I like Forsberg's overall game more.

Those bottom pairs could play about the same number of minutes each night. Valimaki would be playing for CGY right now if it didn’t open him up to Seattle expansion eligibility. I’d be willing to gamble on that. Worst case scenario: you play the Forbort—Gustafsson pair as your 2nd pair minutes.

So you wouldn’t sign Byfuglien on a short-term deal for cheaper than Hanifin if he wanted to come play in CGY? Of course that one is a “who knows if it could happen”. The rest of the moves on D are in range. Hanifin price is fair market value to a team that needs a LD. Gus and Forbort are fair market value based on production.

Looked really good in camp but this is the exact reason why Hanifin cant be moved. Hurts even more if Gio continues to regress.

Which would be an utter disaster. There isn't a team in the Pacific that wouldn't feast on that pairing playing 20+min a night. You don't have the horses in net to sustain that kind of attack.

Hanafin isn't even remotely close to being one of Calgary's top problems. Goaltending and a lack of quality center and right wing depth are. If Hanafin isn't being traded to address one of those issues, you aren't trading Hanafin.

Goaltending is not the issue this year. Talbot matched Hellebuyck’s numbers in 2020, and is playing lights out. Pretty awesome guy to have as a “1B” for under $3M.

And Rittich still has good upside potential. These guys are a very solid, worthwhile gamble for cheaper than your average starter goalie AAV.

We don’t need LHD. Change it to Andersson and we’d be more interested. (Although CGY obviously wouldn’t be interested).

Hanifin was far and away CGY’s worst dman during the WPG series. He’s not physical. And his skating/passing/defending was nowhere near where it needs to be.

Sure, I can agree it’s a big gamble to move him out right now without having Valimaki proving he can handle 20 minutes. That’s a great/fair comment. I’m pitching a bit of a gamble here in this post because I think it ends up working out for CGY.

Do you agree on Hanifin‘s trade value? Because CGY could pursue some options in UFA or trade with those assets to acquire another LD to replace him.

So you need a RD to replace Weber or Petry? Or both? Those guys aren’t moving out of the top 4 anytime soon...

He also looked great in the 24 games he played with CGY in 2018-19. If he can play at that level (2 years ago) consistently, he’s ready for 2nd pairing minutes. I watched him closely during those games: he reads the game and moves at an NHL pace as a rookie dman. Pretty rare.

But thats the exact problem, that was 2 years ago. I think he will be top pairing ready in a year or so but Im not moving Hanifin and overexposing him to find out. Like what exactly are you trading him for here? Buffs done hes 35, overweight and has no desire to keep playing. I wouldnt offer him more than 1M. I will gladly keep our young promising LD with term

Based on the hockey I was watching, Hanifin was the worst dman against WPG. Got exposed on 80-90% of shifts. Basically had the same level of performance as Gaudreau. I was surprised to see it, because I’ve quite liked Hanifin’s skating — it makes it tough to beat him. But with the increased physicality of playoffs, his controller turned off, just like Gaudreau’s did.

Andersson did a really nice job bailing him out throughout the series.

I’m all for building a playoff team, not a regular season team. 1st in the West doesn’t mean much when the chips are actually on the table.

To replace them when they get older. Which I’d say we definitely need someone for 3-4 years from now. But I wouldn’t mind having 3 top 4 RHD for a few years before that like St. Louis.

So for the next 3-4 years you’d prefer to run with 3 rookie LD? Romanov looks great, but hasn’t played a game. Mete is average, might have upside. But he’s been in the league for awhile now and isn’t really blossoming. Chiarot is actually quite solid, but he’s a fit for 2nd pair. Hanifin is young, experienced, and on a great contract. CGY has Valimaki, Kylington, Forbort, Mackey, etc. as depth options on LD to fill in for Hanifin behind Giordano, hence why I pitched the deal. I personally think CGY can afford to move Hanifin and still improve the overall lineup.

Price is not getting younger. Shouldn’t MTL be trying to win in the next 3-4 years while y’all have that caliber of goalie and Shea Weber in the lineup?

What? Gaudreau played quite well this series. Also Hanifin was a lot better than Forbort. I dont know if you noticed this year but Gio had a pretty massive regression from last year. What if that happens again and we trade Hanifin. Then we instantly suck. At least with Hanifin he is atill 23 and improving so he can step up and skate first line minutes with Ras. Valimaki is not ready for that.

Montreal’s window to win probably starts in 21-22. By that point we would have Chiarot & Romanov on the left side. That’s not the best left side in the league, but we have two top pairing D on the right side so it balances it out. Mete/Kulak can play on the 3rd pairing. After that Norlinder, Harris, and later Struble can replace Chiarot and take up some roster spots. I’m really high on Romanov, and I don’t think that we should trade for a LHD that will block Harris or Norlinder’s path to the NHL.

As for the RHD, that’s just me thinking probably too far ahead. Ideally we can draft/acquire a young RHD right now, so that they’re ready to take over Weber/Perry’s responsibilities in 3-4 years.
