How does either Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar make this list? They're great and have promising futures, but no way they're top-10 in the league already.

Decision between Couturier, Barkov an Aho was rough, but I went this way. I can fully see why some would think otherwise.

Imo Ellis and Ekholm are great defensemen, but not necessarily TOP10.

They both were quite remarkable D-men already this year. Best of their teams. Offensively very capable D-man, which is sort of a must during this day's NHL...

Makar and girard both need their D partners to shelter them and they don't even play the most important minutes on their teams, that makes ekholm and ellis better Dmen

Frankly I don't agree with the notion of Preds having 3 of the best 20 D-men in the league. Their defensive numbers are too poor in order to that to be true.

Imo Makar belongs to TOP10, as he's performance has been extremely positive and it's reflected well on his team's performance. Hughes I can justify replacing with someone else.

Their goaltending has been relatively poor this season

Hughes wasn't even Vancouver's best defender this season.

Nashville does have 3 of the best defencemen in the league. Their problem is they can't score and Rinne sucks every other season. Their blueline is a major reason as to why they were even close to contending this season.

Rinne ain't even their 1G anymore. I don't think this can be pinned up to goalies.

As a DAL fan I can say that their goalies have stolen more than a few games...

Who was VAN's best D if not Hughes?

I think an argument should be made for Edler.

Hughes may have had more points and slightly higher CF% and FF%, but was sheltered with 75% of his starts in either the neutral zone or the offensive zone. Edler produced, was close to breaking even in both of those shot metrics, and started almost exclusively in either his own end or the neutral zone.

Transition and production are quality elements in a defenceman, but playing defence is still part of the job requirement. I think Edler covers the spread more than Hughes did.

Acceptable. I think I'll reconsider the Hughes addition.

How about Werenski?

Weber 3??? Karlsson isn't top5. Missing Ellis.

My question for those who say this: How is Ovechkin better than Marchand?

Yeah, Weber's an amazing D. 3rd is tad high, but I don't think he's much lower.

I still think EK is an elite D-man. Just been riddled with injuries pretty much his whole time in SJ.

As for Ovie, I think he is better. His presence is more important for the Caps than what Marchand's is for the Bruins. He's physical and probably the best natural scorer the modern hockey knows.

" His presence is more important for the Caps than what Marchand's is for the Bruins "

What? Marchand has been the Bruins best forward during the whole regular year. Elite offensively and on PK as well. And way harder to make all those setups than wait and finish it like Ovi.

What I meant by that is that I think Bruins could manage better without Marchand in comparison Caps without Ovechkin. This way his presence is more important.

If you view Marchand as better, it's fine. Nothing points out that to be wrong.

Disagree. At LW, Vrana is better than DeBrusk and they got Kovalchuk who can move up as well. They have more depth up front.
