retool not rebuild

Created by: buttrs17
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 7, 2020
Published: Aug. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This assumes what everyone thinks is inevitable: The Pens end up getting the #1 pick. Getting rid of Bjugtsad, Hornqvist, and Johnson is all addition by subtraction, in my opinion. Go big with Torey Krug in free agency.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Hörnqvist, Patric ($1,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I'm a huge fan of Hornqvist. Huge. But, his contract is big and his production has been declining. Have to start making moves for the future somewhere.
2.
PIT
  1. 2020 4th round pick (NSH)
ANA
  1. Bjugstad, Nick
  2. Simon, Dominik
Additional Details:
These two can be shipped anywhere for any return. I chose ANA because I looked at a Sportsnet thing that said they were weak at both spots.
3.
PIT
  1. Jones, Caleb
  2. 2021 6th round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. Murray, Matt
Additional Details:
While I don't think Murray deserves all the blame for his performance, it certainly isn't worth risking the future on. I think someone will overpay because of the two cups. I think this is a high price, but hey... who knows? EDM did give Lucic $42 mil once :)
4.
PIT
  1. 2021 5th round pick (LAK)
LAK
  1. Johnson, Jack ($500,000 retained)
  2. Zohorna, Radim
  3. 2020 5th round pick (PIT)
  4. 2021 7th round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
It's going to take a prospect and picks to rid the Pens of this pylon. Again, to anywhere for anything. I chose LA because they have room, lots of picks, and maybe they believe Doughty can turn him around?

Dispite the fact I am a big of a pens fan, I’d still hate for them to get Laf. They should have been in the playoffs. Meaning, they should not have a shot at pick number one.

I mean if the consolation prize is Laf, I'll take technically missing the playoffs.

I could see Jones take a step back in his development next year. But that’s just me.

I’d like to see him given the third pair next season.

MTL is not paying $4M for 3 more seasons of a soon to be 34 y. o. invisible man.

Brook is our best RHD prospect with top4 potential, even if you retained 100% of Patrick we decline

Krug is a joke, he's the last thing the penguins need.
They need a defense man who can be mean and nasty. That isn't tiny Krug.

At this point, it would take more than a 1st round pick to get a team to take Johnson's contract. He's that bad.

The pens did make the playoffs. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NHL_franchise_post-season_appearance_streaks
The condition on the pick was that it was lottery protected, not whether or not the pens made the playoffs.
