The issue is New York and Toronto have the same need. NYR have a far better offensive D core, but the defensive aspect is awful for both teams.

Single-handedly get us in the Aatu Raty conversation.

BTW just found out Henrik retiring doesn't cost us a dime!

he's not necessarily good per say, just good enough. Good skater and decent possession stats, he might be able to play an ADA light role with Staal. That pairing would be HEAVILY sheltered...

I think the leafs cap situation deems this a no. I’m not sure that deangelo is the type of Dman we need but I can’t complain about the value.

If they can make this trade and then package assets like say Dermott and Johnson to get a Defensively responsible RHD to play with Reilly, they would be in pretty good shape. Cap is obviously an issue but conceptually, it's a decent idea...

Yeah Value is there, but DeAngelo is not the kind of defenseman they need. Fox is the dman from that team that the leafs would want.

Rangers decline. They passed on him in the draft so why trade a 50 point dman for him to play 3rd line minutes?

He's the exact cost controlled talent we need to bolster our bottom six. Our bottom six was CRATERED and part of the reason we lost to the canes...

No it isn't, it's awful for the Rangers. TO under Keefe has been much better. In this series they have done one thing poorly and that happens in the offensive zone. Turnovers at the offensive Blueline that result in odd man rushes the other way have led to all the goals scored against. That can be fixed, they did a good job of cutting those down in game 2 and shut out Columbus who got literally nothing offensively. TO could use an upgrade for Ceci, he is terrible but the rest have been good.

Not that I don't dislike the "on ice value", but the Leafs can't take on the cap of DeAngelo. Leafs have to shed over 3m cap right now, and then to shed 7m just to add DeAngelo...doesn't seem worth it.
Rangers, Leafs and so many other teams have this cap problem. Trying to get rid of cap heavy players...even if their on ice value is fair for picks or ELC players.

They passed on him because he was too young and small. If he was a day younger he would be a top 10 pick in this draft.

The Leafs situation isn't bad at all, they need to move Johnsson or Kap and both should have high demand. Good depth guys who can go higher up the lineup when need be is worth something. They aren't like the Islanders or San Jose or Nashville or almost every other team that will need to shed vets making way too much money just to afford their better RFAs. How does Tampa fix their situation? Teams with cap space aren't going to help the many more teams that need space and add horrible contracts with a flat cap situation when they can pick up good players for maybe a little under the market value.

One advantage the Leafs have is they aren't saddled with NTC or even M NTCs which really affect other teams in their ability to trade players to cap abundant aka as poor teams. On this site, there is seems an obsession with the Leafs cap and Leafs need for RHD.
As you suggest the Leafs do have players they can trade, to gain cap space.

He is 18 and was the best goal scorer in major junior. Top 10 pick for sure.

This will probably be an unpopular take, and I would not be surprised at people getting defensive, but I don't want Tony Deangelo on the team I cheer for. Great player. Don't want him.
