Description
——— TRADES ———
Wild start prepping for the 2021 Expansion Draft, knowing they’d have to leave Brodin unprotected, so move him to Montreal, who could use a left handed defenseman. Since Montreal advanced in the playoffs, the 2020 pick will now likely be around 45. To sweeten the pot, Montreal adds Jordan Harris, a B prospect, which the Wild could desperately use more prospect depth at the blue line.

After a serviceable year from Stalock after Dubnyk struggled, Wild ship him to the Flyers who could use an experienced backup goalie on the cheap. Brian Elliott will likely look for more money after a good year backing up Hart, and Philly is pretty tight on the cap. Chuck Fletcher was the one that brought Stalock into Minnesota, so he gets reunited. The Wild free up a spot for Kahkonen to become the 1B goaltender as they look towards the future between the pipes. Possibility that Dubnyk gets moved instead, but given his age, cap hit, and MNTC, he’s too difficult to move.

Pittsburgh keeps their pick for 2020 as part of it being lottery protected. It becomes an unprotected 2021 pick.

——— FREE AGENTS ———
The Wild mostly try to round out depth in their bottom 6 and bottom 3 defensemen. Melker Karlsson gives a bit of veteran presence to the, still very young, forward group while not really threatening to take away minutes from the likes of Greenway, Donato, Kunin, and Erickson-Ek.

Eveson appears to like Hunt, so he’ll fit somewhere in the lineup, with Patteryn remaining as depth. Sekera and Weber are brought in as stable, safe defensemen at a lower cost, but both are familiar with the central division.

——— NOTES ———
The Wild keep enough cap open to sign Fiala to a long term deal.

The Wild find themselves in a much better position to protect 7-3-1 so they do not get fleeced like they did in 2017 losing Tuch and Haula.

Moving Brodin for that little return would be a fireable offense. Given Addison's addition from the Zucker trade which only added to our already deep depth on RD, Dumba is the more likely candidate to get moved. Addison is by and large Dumba's replacement and has looked like an absolute stud during the covid training camps.

Brodin is also the better defenseman so it's more worthwhile keeping him, especially since we don't have much depth past Soucy after Brodin on the left.

Neither Brodin or Dumba are getting moved unless we get a top six center coming back.

Stalock had an incredible season this year. You could get more for him.

Flyers would take that trade. I think most teams would. Stallock seems capable and has a very affordable contract. I'd expect better return if the Wild ship him out.

If you are keen on saving the cap space for Fiala for next season, I would try to weaponize the money. There are plenty of teams looking to unload overpaid players on the last year of their contract... or retain salary and flip for more picks depending on the team's direction.

Stalock is very hard to value in a trade. More or less an older rental backup who has ~1 good year to his name. I could see the Wild keeping him and giving another year in the AHL to Khakonen, but Stalock’s value will likely never be higher.

Would I weaponize the money? Yes. Do I think the Wild will? No. They’ll be a playoff bubble team again next year, so I see them playing the fence leaving enough cap to make a deadline deal. In all, my gut says that Guerin will move pieces to eye the future, but Craig Leopold isn’t going to let him blow it up.

Are you me? I've been saying the same thing for months now (almost verbatim). I feel like people are finally starting to turn around a little, but it's annoying to see how many people just blindly say Brodin is going to be traded before Dumba without taking a look at the bigger picture.
