1st overall blockbuster

Created by: VanFan10
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2020
Published: Aug. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My attempt at a fix for both teams Given Edmonton wins the 1st overall and San Jose realizes Burns/Karlson didn't work out.

Edmonton Gains- Their top stud on the back end and there 3rd line centre that can move up to the top line on the wing if needed.

Edmonton loses - A likely top 10 player for years to come, a sturdy young defenseman with good potential and a risk on Karlson at 11.5 for the next .... 7 years.

Edmonton recap: Edmonton's in win now mode, while they could take Laf at 1 and run with another star in the top 6 (see Toronto). I think the best case scenario is to use that pick on a stud anchor on the back line. I choose Karlsson because his value is lower coming off a down year. Edmonton has to take a risk that Karlsson hasn't lost it and i don't think he has, but they get to offload a few expiring contracts while opening up some spots on their d line for their younger guys looking to make the club. Karlsson takes full control of the powerplay and Edmonton would be looking to take a run at the cup with Conner/Dri/Karlsson all hart candidates in the last 5 years.

SJ gains: Adds the stud of the draft potential top 10 player in the league for years to come. Restructures their backline hitting the eject button on Karlson and goes back to Burns/Vlad and add young sturdy backliner. Gains another potential 2nd pairing defense on their rookie contract.

SJ loses: Their number 1a defense and a solid 2nd line centre. They don't gain much in cap space but add a couple expirying contracts. Take on Neals contract for 3 years.

SJ recap: Its a shift on the fly for a SJ team that was not expecting to be were they are... a big shift. They quickly get the fans excited by bringing in Laf to play on their top line and add scoring but lose Karlsson and Hertl in the process. The real benefit they gain is freeing up so long term cap space while adding young strong prospects into their system right away with two first round picks (edm)(tampa).

This trade is a pretty crazy one. If i thought the sharks were done I’d say yes as it’s great for rebuilding. I’m not really ready to give up yet though

Yeah not like you can be a terrible team one year and great the next, kind of like Edmonton totally has never done.

Good explanation but we need a much larger return. Klefbom, Jones, and AA still have lots of value.

Ottawa got a worse return back when Karlsson was on a better contract and was still a superstar

Fair enough. I just don't see how that back end works for them and when I look 3 years down the road, it's old and its expensive.

You looked at the top-nine forwards before hitting submit, right?

There's no way Edmonton entertains the risk associated with Karlsson. Less so that they do so in a Lafreniere trade.

I think you are underestimating Hertl at your 3rd line centre, that guy is good and lets you run 3 lines. Either Edmonton runs with the current roster and complains about their defense for the next 6 years or they find a way to get that big name player back there. I don't think you win a cup without that.

Well they have McDavid and draisaitl ( who have won 3 out of the last 4 art ross trophys ) and the sharks have ... well ... bunch of has been and under achievers. Except Hertl he is the truth.

What did you have in mind. Hertl is a player, I don't see how you get much more for that package.

If you have Hertl as your third line center you have the best in the league. He also plays wing Id expect that’s where you would play him
