Exactly. For a top defenceman you would most likely have to move one of Nylander/Matthews/Marner/Tavares. Matthews won't be moved since he's the franchise guy, Tavares contract is unmovable, Marner cap hit is too high, so Nylander is most likely the option

Its crazy that the Leafs could have 8 sub-1 mill contracts in a lineup, with a 20 man roster, and still be way over the cap. Like how are they supposed to win? and now that they know its not working, how are they supposed to change the structure?

How is Tavares contract unmovable?

Nylander is the most likely to move but not because the rest have bad contacts

the assumption was that the cap would keep increasing and they could improve the D with the extra money no one could foresee COVID

This is horrible for Ellis! We would be able add to Ellis for Nylander but this is ridiculous

$11M contract, NMC, about to be 30, Flat Cap for 3 years. Its not impossible, but it would be incredibly difficult to move. Unless he had another teams bed sheets perhaps?

No one is gonna take the Tavares contract due to cap hit, term and age. Maybe saying unmovable is exaggerating, but nonetheless it will be EXTREMELY doubtful that it is moved before Marner or Nylander.

I understand from a Leafs/Tavares point you don;t want to move him

If He was a UFA right now he would easily get it with 7 years

I agree he won't be moved but not because of his contract its because HE and the Leafs have no interest in moving.

Only few teams in the NHL could take on that contract right now with no questions asked. With the flat cap being in effect for the next 3 years, no one can afford a $11-million 1C without losing another part of their team. Trust me, no one wants to trade a bunch of assets for one player with a steep cap hit unless he's McDavid/Matthews/Eichel, etc.

Sure as a UFA, you would bid on him for the $ and TERM you prefer for your team, not Toronto's.

true but I think every team was caught off guard obviously. Most teams are in some kind of bind but the Leafs are extremely pressed now. Even if the cap went up to 84, they still have some major issues to work through. The fundamental structure is going to cause many issues
