Detroit declines, that's not a big enough incentive to take on JJ's contract

This is super important. The most important thing Yzerman can do this summer is get our re-signing done early. Establish how much cap space we have, and start the bidding war.
None of the teams taking on cap dumps are charities, they will eek out every little extra pick, prospect, roster player they can get. Ex. if this is the best offer Yzerman gets, he would be silly not to try and wedge a 5th or 6th in there. Sure the 5th rounder probably isnt going to be a player, but it can be used to move up.

Exactly, a move like this prevents us from making other more appealing moves. It's not bad at face value, but just not worth it in the grand scheme of things

If this is made late in the offseason, and we haven't got anything better to do with our cap space it's better than nothing. The buyout isn't dreadful, or he can sit on the bottom pair and be a mentor, sounds like he's a fairly solid guy.
