Panarin Makes Too Much Sense

Created by: NickC1988
Team: 2017-18 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 7, 2016
Published: Sep. 7, 2016

Description
Montreal needs a potent goal scorer and has the money to acquire one. Panarin may be hard for the hawks to resign while staying competitive. Montreal has good prospects at each position as well as a super star goalie in his prime. The time to win is now and Panarin may be the key to success.

Chicago is going to want what they want for Panarin, not what you want to give up.
They will probably want a very high pick (1st round?) and 2 solid established players and a prospect. Probably much more than you are offering.

Mr Bill. You may correct what Chicago wants, but there are a limited number of teams that have the cap to take on Panarin, without giving money back to the Hawks. And teams may not want to give up "2 solid established players" and more just to get one player. Interesting scenario next year.

As a hawks fan I'll gladly take this return it allows the hawks to spend money on free agents.

No joke, Im starting to use this in my future AGM's. If Chicago fans are happy with it, MTL fans should be happy with it. This is a done deal. Its rare on this site that two fan bases can come to an "virtual" trade where both are happy.

To be honest on behalf of MTL, we could add a later draft pick also to sweeten the deal if necessary. There are bunch of protection needed prospects in our system that could be spared instead as well.

I really really like this idea NickC1988!

Hawks fan here and I wouldn't touch this trade unless other teams, hearing that Panarin is available, somehow offer less...

no thanks.

The way I see it, less is more. More Cap Space would be a nice luxury to have for free agency and new contracts.

Don't get me wrong, i tend to agree with you. (Even as a MTL fan) The thing is Hawks will have to decide how they want to trade Panarin. They can't trade him for a lot of things which restricts their possibilities. Maybe a team can better this contract in terms of the draft picks instead of prospects involved but not by a landslide. Those 3 are very decent.

Ultimately if Panarin is traded, the asking price, whether they get it or not, will be a 1st rounder and a top prospect. For MTL it would be something along the lines of Scherbak and a 1st. Probably a little more than that.

The only way this deal would go down is if Panarin agrees to an extension after the trade 6years 6M

Panarin would still be under RFA status so i don't think we'd have to worry about losing him to free agency. MTL would offer him what he wants and he would be happy to sign it. he'll get higher than 6m a year though. If we go the max 7 years, I think 6.5-6.75/year would be enough to get him to sign.

If he were willing to sign for that price, Chicago would not be trading him.

Why is that? Its not like they have endless cap space in which to spend on? They're not doing this trade out of wanting to move Panarin, Its because they know if they sign him they'll be in cap hell going forward. Panarin will not get 7.5M. So were talking about between 6.75M to 7.5M. At this point its trivial. Fine add the extra half mil if needed. I have a feeling landing around 7M will make sense for both parties. Anyways even if it ends up being more, that's fine. We nearly paid 6M for 7 years for Lucic. I'm way more willing to spend 7.5M for Panarin.
