Trade down with LA - clean up future cap sheet

Created by: VOFS
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2020
Published: Aug. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I believe Byfield has just good a shot of becoming a superstar as Lafreniere does. It also helps that the Rangers need a future 1C so that they can avoid giving a catastrophic contract to Mika in summer '22, and that their system forward depth is on the wings. LA has the opposite issue, where their system depth is at center. Assuming LA thinks Lafreniere is worth the premium, this trade makes sense for both teams.

Talbot got a 2, a 3 and a 7th. Georgiev is better and younger at this point in his career, so 2 2nds seems pretty reasonable value wise.

That's like saying they will wake up the next day. What team has ruled it out?

That was 5 years ago. Talbot was coming off a .926 save % and a 2.2 GAA. Georgiev hasn't put up anything close to that yet. The goalie market was way different then too. there are only like 6 or 7 teams in the market for a goalie and way more than 6 or 7 goalies available. Teams won't have to give that much for a goalie when they can get get a UFA for free or just trade with another team. Seattle Expansion will force some teams into a bind. Obviously Georgiev could be protected for it's different for NYR, but the point is the goalie market isn't the same as it was 5 years ago. The hawks only got a 2nd for a half retained Lehner. Lehner is in his prime and was a vein finalist last year. Yeah Georgiev is younger, but does that make him worth twice as much as Lehner? No way IMO

The goalie market overall needs to be factored in too. 7 UFA goalies plus 3-4 teams wanted to shed goalies for 5ish open spots.

Its a pretty decent deal. I would have taken it as a Flames fan if they won #1 but Calgary also has a depleted prospect pool unlike NYR

But like, why? If you think (as I do) that Byfield and Lafreniere are essentially the same level of prospect, then why wouldn't you make that swap and collect two other Top 40 prospects in the bargain?

Because we need a superstar potential player like Lafreniere and I'm higher on Stutzle than Byfield but it's as simple as upside.

So it comes down to you disagreeing with me that Byfield has the same superstar potential as Lafrieniere. Got it, fair enough

Not trying to argue and you may have a point since he's a whole year younger and a beast but Lafreniere Is just levels ahead. We can't mess it up ya know...

LAK have no need to make that deal.
Georgiev isn’t worth 2-2nds imo

Who's talking about need? If the stars align and LA values Lafreniere that high, than my belief is that the Rangers should make a swap along those lines. And like I said above, happy to trade Georgiev for just one 2nd too.

I believe LA likes Stutzle so the high is a no.

Man thats a tough package to get 1OA I don’t think Kings move Turcotte Vilardi or kaliyev. I can see madden (even though I really like him) 2OA and maybe something else not named the 3 I named previously. But I’d say this is close.

Personally I don’t do it.

If I were Kings management I wouldn't do it either. This all comes down to how much better than Byfield/Stutzle and the wingers they already have in their pool they think Lafreniere is. There's an inflection point where it makes perfect sense to do a deal like this
