You're hoping that Hughes one day develops into the kind of player Point is today... easy decline

There's at least a 95% chance Hughes will never be as good as Point

I opened this thinking hey, this could be an interesting idea. Hughes had a very disappointing first year, but he has a ton of potential. Maybe Cirelli+Sergachev as the starter package for him- 2 high quality players that would upgrade the Devils right away, as well as helping TBL's current cap problem. Then I saw Point++ and laughed.

Even Cirelli + Serg is laughable for Hughes. The kid is barely NHL level talent at this point.

That's ridiculous lol was he NHL ready, no, but to say he's barely an NHL talent is as laughable as this trade offer. The Devils didn't do him any favors by playing him with Simmonds and Zacha for 90% of the year. Kakko was much more a disappointment.

It's too early to be this drunk.

Flip the picks around and I could see Tampa maybe doing that just to move some cap out.

Point is very good. Justifying his skill by his draft position is never the right way to go about it. I dont expect Hughes to be a superstar but I think he will be a very solid top 6 center.

Edit* I misread your comment and thought you were saying Hughes is (going to be) better

Well then you're an idiot. He just turned 19. By that logic, Kakko and Dach are AHL'ers right now because they had very similar seasons statistically while playing with better players and being 6'2/6'3 200 lbs. Give him time.

Likely because of his supporting cast. Hughes was playing a more difficult position, on a team where he had to do more, with lesser quality linemates. Judging by that, Hughes had a better season, but he was picked first, so I don't know if you can say he was less disappointing.

I've thought about this as well. He would've had to play in the O for the Steelheads since they owned his rights since he wasn't eligible to play in the AHL. Hindsight is 20/20- for what it's worth, he averaged a point per game in pre season and i believe he had 5 or 6 points through his first 9 games, so at that point nobody thought he would've tailed off like he did.

Hughes is small he was bound to take extra time to develop. Look at Thornton in his first season, 7 points in 55 games. Next year he had 41 points. Hughes will get better, but idk if he will be better than Point. I think Point is a good comparison for ceiling.

During the draft the consensus was Hughes will be the better player 2-3 years down the line, but Kakko will be able to contribute 50 plus points right away. "He's already done it against men and he's already built for the NHL" is a phrase that was routinely used when describing his game. Instead, on a team loaded up front and playing an easier position, he didn't do very well. He was statistically one of the worst players in the NHL from an analytical standpoint (-9.6 GAR) So yeah, I'd say he had a worse season. I still think he'll be very good though

Kakko should break put next year (and would have regardless of Lafreniere). Some players take more time to transition to the different ice surface.

I completely agree, it also didn't help that he hadn't had any time off in about a year and a half. Liiga, WJC, Liiga, WC's, Traverse City, training camp, then an NHL season. He definitely looked stronger in the bubble after some time off.

Obviously he will get better, but I am not convinced he will be a premier NHL player ever. The over-hype on these top prospects is rampant these days...even Hischier? Patrick? Bleh
