Its not a bad thought, moving a big salary from a position of depth
Although a lot of Leaf fans are down on Anderson, his value is really weak, and the fact is TOR has no one even close to him. DET doesn't need him, but he probably fetches a 3rd, but not a high 2nd as well.
TOR, in my opinion, has weak team defense, weak defense, weak physicality, poor system and needs more. TOR fans will put all their eggs in the sandin/liljegren/lehtonen basket and hope for the best on defense, but I think reilly is a weak number 1, Muzzin a good number 3 and Holl and dermott is a solid 3rd pairing, rosen and marincin are just #7 guys, but relying on two of the youngsters to hit their stride ASAP in the top 6 is a trap door. If the coaches cant change the system and teach the forwards to forecheck and backcheck they need a much better back six.
They need a foligno and a laughton (or debrusk/perry) at forward, physical two way players with hands and good hockey sense, who take the body, stand up for their teammates and can put up points.
IMO, the team will never take the next step without making a few changes. Value cost value, so say some variation of the Bruins deal (maybe throw out the BOS 2nd and TOR adds a prospect) and say kapanen for scott laughton, (Laughton had 9 less pts in 20 less games than kapanen, and plays a game TOR needs, and can play C or LW). Move Johnsson for those type of picks and stay well clear of a 5mil toffoli.
Robertson-Matthews-Nylander
Debrusk-Tavares-Hyman
Kerfoot-Laughton-Spezza/Mikheyev
Mikheyev/Spezza/Engvall/Perry/Barabanov/some 4th line hitter
(a much more balanced forward corps, with physicality and still a capable top 10 offense).
