Created by: lifeofadman
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2020
Published: Aug. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pro: Cap space, getting assets while you can
Con: Fred is a damn good goalie and good in the room. Would hate to see him leave.

Hill is a solid young goalie but he's not taking that starting job from Kuemper or Raanta, Give him a chance to platoon with Campbell in the Leafs net.

That Oilers trade is so bad! Why would you even post it?

Please give me your thought process for this trade.

Keep in mind that this is an outsiders opinion, but I don't think that Edmonton takes that deal. Koskinen showed that he is a good enough goalie to bring Edmonton to the playoffs. I don't think that they would give up a solid prospect to add a goalie when they really need winger help for McDavid. I do think that you could get similar value from a different team looking for a goalie.

Trading Andersen at this stage when his value is at it's absolute lowest wouldn't net you that return. Edmonton's defense is actually worse so I don't think there's an appetite to move Bouchard. What Toronto would likely get by moving him this offseason probably wouldn't be worth it. Probably better off to just keep him the one more year (or trading him mid-season if his value suddenly spikes)

Dermott isn't worth an early 2nd round pick.

Bouchard worth more than Freddie. Shattenkirk isn't the type of defenceman we need

I’d say the only person you’re getting for Freddy is Murray 1 for 1

Not getting 38th OA for Dermott, you can probably use him to trade up in the 2nd round though. Your 2nd and Dermott for our 2nd

This is a good value trade for Colorado, so Avs accept. If Grubauer does well in the playoffs we'd look to flip Andersen though.

I agree that there isn't an appetite to move Bouchard and Toronto should probably hang on to Andersson. Both of these teams underperformed during their respective play-in series, but that shouldn't be a reason to panic. Both suffered some bad bounces and probably deserved a better outcome, but that is the way the game goes some times. In some respects I see this as Karma... Edmonton losing to Chicago serves the purposes of Bettman and the NHL owners, there is far more revenue to be generated by having Chicago play on further. Its unfortunate for Leafs fans, but their loss is the balance, especially given that Montreal eliminated Pittsburgh as well.

On the matter of Edmonton's defense:

Edmonton's regular season goals against per game was 3.03, ranked 15th in the league. The Leaf's regular season goals against per game was 3.17, ranked 26th in the league. Edmonton has the option of returning next season with the same group, or working to improve it. Toronto can't afford to retain Ceci and Barrie, and will need to move out salary in order to improve upon its defense. Having pointed out these facts, I think its important to acknowledge that neither Edmonton nor Toronto is in a position to boast about the strength of its defense. I did not watch much of the Leaf/Blue Jackets series, but I did watch the Oilers/Black Hawks and can tell you that Edmonton's team defense was soft, soft, soft. I suspect Toronto's d was overwhelmed at times as well, but I accept that this assumption may be incorrect.

I want to be fair, and as an Oiler fan I think I should acknowledge the following:

1. Barrie did not live up to what was expected of him, so there may be some improvement through subtraction;
2. Toronto fans are justified in being very excited about Rasmus Sandin;
3. Oiler fans should wish to have a d-man like Rielly Morgan on their team, and if he was an Oiler he would be saved from future embarrassments at the hands of McDavid (sorry, couldn't resist that one);
4. Jake Muzzin is a better veteran presence than Kris Russell.

To clarify when I stated Toronto's defense was better (hilarious, I know) I was solely thinking of the play-in rounds and how much opportunity their opponents were given to score, so there's some recency bias and CBJ's offense is hardly the same test Edmonton faced so I'll withdraw that claim given different opponents, small sample sizes and that I've basically forgotten most of how this season went since it ended 5 months ago.

Now to acknowledge your points

1) Easily the biggest disappointment of the season. A RHD that's good in transition and likes to jump up (and given the full green light to do that without consequences) should have been an amazing fit for this team. Somehow Cody Ceci (also gone thank Christ!) and Justin Holl surpassed him in the depth chart while he blasted shot after shot into the shins of his opponents.

2) Sandin and Liljegren will be a great tandem in a few years despite every ACGM tossing Liljegren into every trade scenario imaginable. There's reason for excitement for both prospects IMO

3) McDavid embarrasses every D in the league so there's absolutely no shame for Rielly on that play.

4) I'm very glad Muzzin's been re-signed. Had that neck-injury been his last game as a Leaf I would be inconsolable.

Both teams are fun to watch, and have some outstanding talent and some significant flaws. We'll see how the work of young Dubas and elder Holland compare over the next couple of seasons. Should be interesting.
