Do we really think kreider is the missing link? not that he's bad but we essentially have him already in landy, and that contract might not age so well if he slows down.

Issue is he just resigned. I doubt they trade him before he even plays a game for his new contract

No interest in Hajek. And Graves is too important to our D group to move him, so that's a no go.

@coga16 Has slowly been winning me over on the Kreider front. I'd be ok with acquiring him so long as we're not giving up a 1st, a top 5 prospect, or anything more than Jost off the roster.

We've seen in the round robin how effective Landeskog and Kadri can be together, but that means that the 1st line misses Landeskog. Adding Kreider would give us a player like Landeskog on both lines.

If Kreider slows down a lot then we can trade him in 2024 when his NMC becomes a 15-team trade list (if not sooner if he's ok with waiving his NMC).

It would also be a really terrible look for GM Gorton to trade Kreider for Graves 18 months after basically giving Graves away for free.

I think they'd decline as well, but I am curious to see what they'll say. Stanley isn't really a lock to make the NHL as more than a 6/7 D and those types of guys can be found pretty cheap in UFA so it's no big deal. If they decline then I'd just move Kamenev for a pick somewhere.

Just curious, If Jost was taken out, would you make it a 2021 1st?

Not enough capspace for that unfortunately, which is why I moved Cole. There would nonetheless be space to acquire a really good 6/7D who's a little bit cheaper than Cole though.

Im sure they would try to before his NMC kicks in. They had no idea they were going to be gifted Laffy.
golden opportunity to set up their roster for the next decade if they can ensure they dont have his aging contract on the books

We're probably going to need to trade Jost one way or another simply due to a numbers game in the forward positions, and I'd guess that he gets a 2nd + 3rd sort of deal. So the question here is, would I rather have a 2021 1st, or a 2nd + 3rd. And the answer is that I'd rather have the 1st.

It's a pretty reasonable suggestion for you to make though, and it's not a bad idea. But keep in mind that Sakic was reluctant to part with a 1st + prospect at the deadline for Kreider, so I doubt he'll be willing to do that now either.

WPG invested such a high draft pick in obtaining Stanley that they can’t afford to give up on him this quickly for such little return

Yeah that was my conundrum as well. The easiest place to trim would be to give Burakovsky less AAV and term, but then you walk him to UFA sooner. Alternatively try to squeeze Namestnikov or Nichuskin down by a couple of $100k's. It's already tight as it is though.

If you can't squeeze those down then it's essentially a choice between keeping Cole or signing Namestnikov. And with Kaut waiting in the wings I think there's a good case to be made for choosing to stick with Cole for 1 more year. But then again he'd be the 7D so the strongest roster would be to go with Namestnikov. You can argue it both ways and have a valid point.

How do I know that Jost is going to get traded?

Well for starters he's clearly the odd man out on our current roster, given that he's been scratched in 2 of 3 round robin games.

That isn't really a slight on him though per se, because we have one of the deepest forward groups in the league. Until we acquired Namestnikov at the deadline Jost was easily a 3rd liner for us. He's also better than Nieto in a vacuum, but Nieto seems to mesh better with Bellemare and Calvert on the 4th line.

Looking ahead, if we add a top 6 forward this offseason then it's Jost who's the obvious odd-man out to get upgraded.

That said, I highly doubt that Sakic would move him unless we get fair value in a trade for him. He's a young, cheap, and defensively reliable 3rd liner with potential to find more offense than he has done so far. It's not unfathomable that he could break out at age 23 if given more of an opportunity in a scoring role, as he's shown flashes of that in last years playoffs as well as pre-lockdown with 7 points in 9 games when we had a few injuries and he got some more minutes.

If we don't get a 2nd + 3rd (or better) offer I think we'd be more than happy to just resign him at a cheap caphit and keep him around. His positional versatility; reliability with the puck and defensively; and ability to play in all situations makes him the perfect 'swiss army knife' depth forward to have, so we won't be in a rush to trade him if there aren't any good offers.
