Buffalo and Calgary deals

Created by: FLPensFan
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2020
Published: Aug. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buffalo gets an upgrade at goalie. Pittsburgh adds another capable RD (they had interest in Montour before Buffalo acquired him). McCann and Middlestadt is a swap of players that haven't panned out as expected. McCann has more NHL experience and production to date, Middlestadt still has higher overall potential. All players involved here are RFAs with arbitration rights.

Pittsburgh takes another chance on a player that has struggled to live up to his draft status in Bennett. He helps by being able to play center and wing if Middlestadt can't stick with the big club. Bennett for Bjugstad had been discussed between the teams about a year prior, and I believe Pittsburgh backed out. With Bjugstad a UFA and injury issues, Pittsburgh needs to add a prospect or pick into the deal.

Pittsburgh adds Poulin, Joseph, Middlestadt, Bennett, and Montour to their lineup, giving them some added youth they are looking for.

This is a tough one. I like McCan a lot. But Ullmark was a lot better than Murray this year, he would probably spilt time with him.
How good is McCan at center?

Thats a no from buff. I can see possibly if Mitts was taken out.

But really I can't see buff going for Murray he wouldn't be the #1 and murray would want to be paid like one.

McCann seems to play better at LW. Pittsburgh wanted McCann to be their 3C of the future, but, he was very up and down in the center role this season. Short term, Buffalo gets the immediate better player in McCann. He's only 24, and he's put up several 30 point seasons already. He seems like he has more to give, but he just hasn't gotten there. Middlestadt longer-term probably has more potential, but he hasn't been able to put it together at the NHL level. Seems like a good change of scenery type move for both players.

this notion that he wouldn't be your number one goalie is ridiculous. Murray is leaps and bounds better than Ulmark despite the rough year. he would instantly be your starter

He had 2 points because he's injured. When he has been healthy, Bjugstad has outscored Bennett ever season he has played, and has surpassed 30 points in 4 of his seasons. I do believe a prospect or pick would need to be added from PIT side because Bjugstad is a UFA and his injury status. If his back isn't healthy, nobody will trade for him.

Well I mean he isn't. And he would be so much worse in buff than in pitt. so no he wouldn't be our number 1. Its the same reason all these pit acgm trade murray instead of keeping him

Yeah than Buffalo would probably decline. They have Skinner, Olofsson Kahun and Johansson at LW already.

he had ONE year where he had worse statistics than Ullmark. This is homerism at its finest. you dont want Murray on your team? thats fine. but to not admit he would be the best goalie your team has had in years is just so inaccurate.

Not really. PIT ACGM trade Murray because most knowledgeable Penguins fans know that Murray is going to cost more, and the Penguins don't have the cap space to keep him. NHL GMs will value Murray's playoff experience over Jarry, who has 1 NHL playoff start. Murray isn't going to pull in a ton, but this is a fair deal. If you think Matt Murray is worse than Ulmark, I don't think there is much more to say here. That's just asinine.

exactly... hes older than Murray and hes been a career AHL goalie. the two aren't comparable. Pens will sell low on Murray and the franchise will regret it as he'll bounce back

Ullmark is just getting to a full time role and is better than murray. I don't know what to tell you. Yeah maybe 3 years ago I would said yes. But it doesn't make sense with ullmark getting better and ready to take the reigns full time.
So take your homerism on murray somewhere else.

That's a fair assessment. I know Kahun can play both wings from his time in Pittsburgh (he played more RW here), but I can't argue with your reasoning. He'd either have to take another shot at playing center for Buffalo or it's not a great fit.

Sabres fans don’t really believe in trades.

Kahun was playing RW in Buffalo for the 5 games they had him. I just don’t know if they want to give up on Mittlestadt yet. It probably would have depended on how well he did in the AHL playoffs but that didn’t happen which is very unfortunate.

No one is denying that Murray had a bad year. But lets compare Murray last year when he had a .919 save percentage or the year before when Ulmark wasn't even an NHL calibre goalie. Murray has been clear cut better every single year of his career except this season and has proven he can win championships. Its not his fault his entire team didnt show up this year. Murray is clearly superior to Ullmark who isnt even a proven NHL goalie yet

My lord, you live in a vacuum or something? Only the most current season matters in everything in your little world?

How about these numbers: 2.81 and .911 to 2.67 and .914. Oh, Murray's the winner there.
Ulmark has 3 career shutouts...Murray has 19....advantage Murray
Murray has 117 career wings...Ulmark 41....advantage Murray
Ulmark has 0 career playoff games....Murray has 51.
Murray backstopped 2 Cups....Ulmark....ZERO

Did you watch any playoffs this year? Murray was not the reason Pittsburgh lost to Montreal

Asinine is your skewed viewpoint on stats and player evaluations. I suppose Rasmus Dahlin sucks because he had 5 less goals and 4 less points this year right. He's so horrible.

Ullmark has literally only played 2 seasons lol. Like I don't understand your argument. Why would I not ride with an up and coming goalie who was better than murray last year.
So one you have to pay murray a lot which doesn't make sense for buffalo and we have to give up valauble assets for him again doesnt make sense.
This is such a bizzare argument between u guys. Like just keep him if he is so good
