Description
Sounds like Dubas is planning on adding some sandpaper and keeping the core 4 together. This almost certainly means Johnsson and Kapanen are gone.

Edmonton has shown interest in Kappy, I like Khaira as a mean bottom 6 guy who can play centre.

Friedman mentioned Gudas could be a target.

Gotta think Dermott and Mikheyev get more than that.

That Kappy trade is no bueno. Khaira is a 4th liner and a 3rd is not enough. Better off keeping Kap or packaging him for a better option at 3rd line center.

Totally, while I am not a fan of Kap, he's worth more than a 4th liner and a 3rd. This is like a 3rd and a 5th for Kap and that just sucks.

Bridge deals through the 2 years of flat cap.

I mean, I was told no on a Khaira for Dermott trade. If Khaira can be had for a 5th sign me right up.

That seems like wishful thinking.

Seems like, youre both RFA's, salary cap isn't going up. This is what you get. When the cap goes up we'll have another look.

It should be readily apparent that unless the budget teams are willing to assist, neither Toronto nor Edmonton can afford to swing trades that increase their respective salaries.

For Dubas, this trade nets him a lesser offensive talent, $2,000,000 in cap space, and a 3rd round pick. Barring help from one of the aforementioned budget teams, Holland will have to give up one of the the top-ranked penalty killing forwards in the NHL last season, decide not to make a qualifying offer to one or both of Benning and Athanasiou, accept that he will have no second or third round picks in the next two drafts, and probably be forced to resign Sheahan for more than he would have been paying Khaira. The cost to the Oilers would be much greater than the return they provide to the Maple Leafs. For that reason I don't think the trade makes sense for either team.

I mean, you're right, the cap is the same as it was last year ($81.5 mil), and that didn't mean that players were ripped off last year, so why would they take a discount this year? Because of poor cap management? How does that conversation go?

"This is all you're getting" "Why? Troy Stecher had similar numbers to me through this point of his career and makes $2.325...he also signed that when the cap was well below $80 mil...", "yeah, well the cap didn't go up this year.", "Oh...ok...but it was at $81.5 mil last year, so, why am I now taking a discount"

*Whispers* "Because we have four players taking up 50% of our cap space"
