Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Similar to my last (Domi for Willy), but working off the Gudas rumour and considering Dermott/Kappy package for walker and a 2nd.
Dubas should be a bit more hard-nosed because he has overpaid RFAs in the past and because of the flat cap.
UFA targets instead of Gudas could be Demelo, Hamonic, Pysyk, and TVR, among others.

The gap between Nylander and Domi isn't as wide as you think! Nylander scores more goals for sure but with linemates like Mathews, Hyman and Tavares its not hard to put up those kinds of numbers. lets see what he can do with Gauthier and Kerfoot

The Kings aren't trading 2nd round picks. They have no interest in Dermott either. Drop Dermott and the 2nd and the Kings would go for it.

However, there is literally 0 chance Walker signs for that contract. He's getting $2.5M minimum.

What about this package deal
Nylander + Kapanen + Dermott
for
Domi + Juuslen + Armia + 2nd and 4th round pick

I like Domi but I'd do that.

Juulsen has almost no value, he's played 37 games (mostly in the AHL) professionally in the last two years. I like Armia, but trading Kapanen for a middle six forward doesn't address team need like trading him for a top 4 defenseman would.

I understand they shouldn't normally trade picks in a rebuild but they're lacking punch up front. The value of Kapanen for Walker one-for-one isn't really there on our end, imo. We would shed cap but we could probably get a better top 4 rhd, which makes me somewhat question my trade proposal in the first place. Apparently, Kapanen has a surprising amount of value still (teams probably look at intensity and foot speed here, and consider the playmaking he needs to score is unavailable to him as a RW-exclusive player).

As far as Walker signing, he's an RFA so his bargaining is relatively limited, although I do have a bit of cap leftover that could possibly bump his salary up.

I wouldn't trade Walker or the 35th overall pick in this draft for Kapanen, and we have no interest in Dermott; if Dermott = Walker, you wouldn't be proposing this trade. Doughty, Walker and Roy are the only 3 RDs we have who are NHL-qualified.

because it makes no sense for the Leafs. Just solve the problem and trade Marner

Marner at 11 Mil will be harder to move than Nylander at 7ish. Not many teams have 11 Mil to waste on a player worth 8-9 Mil. Especially in a flat cap

This is why I would really like to trade Marner to New Jersey. It would make sense for New Jersey, would make sense for Toronto and the Devils will not struggle paying him that much, especially to take some pressure off their young centres.

This may work IF Toronto would be willing to take less back than fair value like say

Marner

for

Severson + Bahl + Wood + Carrick + 3rd

Tried not to send a lot of salary back to Toronto to make it worth their while also tried to keep it pretty close to fair

I would personally like Marner and Dermott for Severson, 7th overall and something.

Marner is in the end still a good player

Yes but I don't see NJ doing this because they have Butcher who is equal or close to Dermott and they have Ty Smith who is an NHL ready top pairing guy. They also have Mueller to cover the third pair. They need RHD as much as the Leafs but have more time to add them.
