I agree, but Edmonton fans will whine about the 1st as is, and his current/past playoff performances are enough to cause concern (but next to McDavid or Leon, should be no issue).

Id try to pry Broberg out since they already have a ton of prospects at d. Maybe Tatar retained and Poehling (since they could use a young c) for Russel, Broberg and a 3rd

The fans at least, seem very high on Broberg. But I am interested in their opinion here.

If I understand the rules regarding salary retention, Tatar would cost Edmonton less than $1,500,000 in real dollars and have a cap hit of $2,900,000. That's an outstanding offer, but I don't think Edmonton is giving up its 2021 1st for one year with Tatar. If he is prepared to sign a contract extension, with a salary Edmonton can afford, I think Holland may be all over that deal.

Would be nice if there was an extension mechanic on ACGM, I guess I could have wrote it in the notes. But even still, Tatar at $2.4M (50% retention) for a full year rental is well below market value. But I think I understand how this site works, if I added even a 7th round pick I would enrage people.

The contract is definitely possible. But again, hed cost way more than a probable late first. MB would ask for Broberg thats for sure

They Jets are fine on bottom pairing defenseman. No need to overpay for another.

Heinola making the team next year? I only see two LD under contract. Maybe the 2nd is a bit high, but Mete would be un upgrade on your outgoing UFA LD.

He's still a bottom pairing guy and the Jets have Samberg who should be ready next season. If not a short term top 4 LD vet could be brought in.

I am gonna be honest, the Mete deal wasn't my main focus. haha. We can find another trade partner. Thanks for the input.

I understand. I just thought the ask was a bit high, which is the only reason I brought it up.

Yeah, its difficult to assess the impact of this proposed trade for the Oilers because it is described from the perspective of the Habs. On its own, I don't think the timing is right for Edmonton. Acquiring Tatar would definitely boost the Oiler top six forwards, but does not elevate the team to real cup contender status. I think that is the kind of impact a trade needs to have if Holland is going to let Broberg go.

Now, if this is just one of a series of big moves Holland makes in order to chase the cup for the next two or three seasons, then it may make sense. For perspective, between now and the next trade deadline he'd have to find some miraculous way to mold his current roster into one that is the equivalent of Vegas, Boston, or even Tampa Bay. Pretty difficult to do that with the his team's current salary structure and roster. Edmonton's progress will be gradual, even if that frustrates people who think they need to win now because they have Connor McDavid.

Lets say we do Tatar (retain), Poehling for Neal, Broberg and 14th OA. Gives you a top 6 forward, a potential 3C and freeing cap so you can sign a solid UFA to upgrade your top 6 even more

I don't see that happening either. Life is tough for Ken Holland right now:

1. He is carrying over $4,500,000 in dead cap (retention and buy-outs) and doesn't have enough cap space to qualify both Athanasiou and Benning, and extend Ethan Bear, Tyler Ennis, or Riley Sheahan.
2. If he can't move a d-man from his NHL roster he is likely to lose William Lagesson to either free agency or a waiver claim.
3. Jesse Puljujarvi remains unsigned.
4. His top goaltending prospect remains under contract in the KHL for next season.
5. This year he has only two selections within the first 107 draft picks, if he decides to keep his 3rd round selection. If he does that then next year he will have a first round selection, and then have to wait until the 4th round for his next selection.
6. The lack of second round picks in the next two drafts, and the League's decision to pro-rate James Neal's statistics and award Calgary on of Edmonton's next two 3rd round draft picks makes it extremely difficult for Holland to build up the organization's list of prospects, and they are already thin with respect to future forwards.

Moving Neal provides significant cap space, and adding Tatar certainly should boost team offense, but Poehling may or may not be of benefit. Clearly trading away Broberg and one of only three draft picks he has in the top three rounds of the next two years will make life even more difficult for Holland. Sure, signing a UFA may help, but doing so almost always results in too much salary and too much term, further exacerbating Edmonton's ability to maintain a competitive club in the future.
