Could They Marner With Kerfoot And Robertson

Created by: AnalyticsGeek

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 13, 2020

Description
I saw a user suggest that the Leafs should put Marner on a line with Kerfoot and Robertson next season. At first, I was a little surprised since I didn’t think it made sense, but after doing some research, I feel it’s worth a shot. A lot of people have the narrative that Marner needs to get carried by an elite center to play at a high level and that’s what I felt as well. However, I looked back on the 2017/18 season and Marner played on a line with Kadri for the final 40 games. He put up 45 points which is a 92 point pace, similar numbers to this season and last. He posted a Wins-Above-Replacement of 2.5, which though isn’t elite, is still very good.

The benefit of having Marner on the third line would obviously be to make matchups harder for the opposition. Given Marner's playstyle and talent, he should be able to set up Robertson for a lot of chances while Kerfoot himself is a very good playdriver. So that line facing the opposition's third line and D pairings, perhaps it could be dangerous.

He helped both our star left shooting sniper centres hit career highs when he played with them. Don't know why he'd play on the 3rd line

Colorado takes a chance picks up a guy nobody wants, he does super well for them and becomes an integral part of the team.. why would they then trade him away a year later for 2 2nds

Agree. Nichushkin is a big part of COL middle 6 two way game

Sorry, it could be our 2056 2nd rounder, and the most we'd be willing to give up is still a 3rd.

I saw the same trade in a Colorado post, so I copied it.

Doesn’t have to be Nichushkin, just want a good defensive Forward who plays like Hyman. Maybe Foligno or Greenway of MIN makes more sense.

Frankly, I see a lot of lateral moves that don’t address the team’s main problems. Shuffling middle six wingers and adding cernak doesn’t move the needle IMO. I like cernak but not if it means the leafs need to move holl. I think they could get similar contribution from a cheaper UFA (demelo or Braun perhaps) while keeping Holl.

Assuming Toronto doesn’t move one of the big four to acquire a top pair RHD, Dubas’ priorities should be adding a stud shutdown 3C and more defensive depth on the right side. A solid grinder like Clifford would also really improve the fourth line

Both Matthews & Tavares have proven that they don’t need Marner to dominate. I like the idea of having Nichushkin with Matthews & Nylander, they’d generate so much possession. Plus Hyman & Mikheyev will just retrieve pucks like crazy, giving more space for JT to score goals.

Well, I think if Toronto is to keep the big 4 & add a legit top 4 D like Cernak or DeMelo, then they will pretty much need to replace Johnsson & Kapanen with cheaper options as well as move out one of Dermott/Holl. I think Kerfoot is fine as 3C. He is good at keeping possession in the offensive zone as well as making smart reads to prevent the opposition from getting to the scoring areas. The team doesn’t give up a lot of chances when he’s on the ice, so I definitely think he has shutdown acumen. Perhaps he needs to have more defensive wingers so that they get better results as a 5 man unit.

I dont think there is a player or scenario that he hasn't tried making sense or no....

Putting kerfoot with marner isnreally only going to slow marner down.. at least when the avs had him they were super disappointed with him, almost like he plays 1 out of every 10 games... the rest of the time he just skates around

Far enough I can see that.
I believe the reasoning behind moving Nichushkin is because that AGM signs Hall into the top 6 and Nichushkin gets bumped out of the lineup

As soon as you put Sandin on the penalty kill, you made a mistake. If you’re trading Johnsson and/or Kapanen, get a defenceman back, not picks. And if you think that replacing Holl with pretty much the same player for $2.5 million more is a good idea; the door’s on the wall, use it.

I don't think Johnsson can fetch a defenceman back, Kapanen could probably get you Murphy from CHI but that's about it. Maybe add a pick for CHI to retain salary. Cernak's best season was better than Holl's best season by quite a bit, plus he's only 21 & also has a high QOC, so I feel fine going with him.

Answer no. Really just exchanging similar on ice value players. Highly unlikely the Leafs can outbid teams for Cernak, so Cernak why would he sign with the Leafs?

The idea of having three guys that are small and no one on the line is physical is a bad idea. Push Robertson and Marner up top with Matthews

In this scenario leafs would trade Kapanen and keep Johnsson.
