Creative Moves to Build Strong D Core

Created by: JALeafs
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2020
Published: Aug. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
You can't underestimate the fact that teams who generally aren't in the upper 10 of annual revenue are going to suffer during COVID. They will need to shed salaries, especially of players on LTIR who are buring a hole in their pockets. Only 80% of Kesler's salary is covered by insurance, so getting the relief would be valuable for them.

The Pesce deal just makes sense. One team has a plethora of defenese, while the other offence.

I think it solves a lot of problems for the leafs without taking too much away from offence... I like your point about Covid and revenue... I think there are a lot of players that may become available because of budget teams. So many stories about good players being traded because owners wanted to shed salary.

YOU THINK:

The difference between Pesce and Dermott = Nylander

REALITY THINKS:

The difference between Pesce and Nylander = More for the Leafs

REGARDING MANSON:

Hamonic + Tanev + are both very similar defensemen.
And both should sign for similar cap-hits this summer.
There are actually lots of solid UFA's at RD this summer.

$8,500,000 - $9,500,000 x 7 years = Pietrangelo
$4,000,000 - $5,000,000 x 4 years = Hamonic
$4,000,000 - $5,000,000 x 4 years = Tanev
$3,000,000 - $4,000,000 x 4 years = Brodie
$2,000,000 - $3,000,000 x 3 years = Riemsdyk
$2,000,000 - $3,000,000 x 3 years = DeMelo
$2,000,000 - $3,000,000 x 2 years = Gudas
$2,000,000 - $3,000,000 x 2 years = Dillon
$1,000,000 - $2,000,000 x 2 years = Shattenkirk
$1,000,000 - $2,000,000 x 1 years = Byfuglien
$1,000,000 - $2,000,000 x 1 years = Braun
$1,000,000 - $2,000,000 x 1 years = Green

Toronto is better off targeting free agents instead of Manson.
And trading guys like Johnsson, Kapanen, Dermott for ELC contracts (or role players on great contracts).

Manson was great 2+ years ago.

He's been declining hard ever since though.

There are few top 2-3 d-men in the league that fit the mold of what the Leafs are looking for. RD, young, low cap hit, and strong defensively. This is a business, negotiation comes down to more than just player vs. player. Carolina will take advantage of this.

I absolutely agree with this. Shopping in the Demelo, Gudas, Dillon area would be great for the Leafs. Ideally they could get two of those guys, and create some real competition on the blueline. Hamonic may even be an option because of the cap situation. Moving Kap and Dermott seems a foregone conclusion for me at this point, Johnsson may survive another season because his market will be soft.

Pesce is a bit over-rated on this site. His numbers this year have not been flattering and they get noticeably worse when he's not paired with Slavin. I don't think he's the answer everyone wants. I'd MUCH rather go after Dougie Hamilton if he's an option with an extension. Carolina also doesn't have the RHD depth anymore since they moved Faulk.
