Why does everyone hate Johnsson

Created by: Saskleaf

Description
I’m guilty of this too... but people seem to think Johnsson is worth nothing now. If you think about it, he should be worth way more than a third. The vast majority of third rounders do not get to Johnssons skill level.

Simple: he's a Leaf. If he's on any other team he gets 2 2nds for sure

Simply put, he's a question mark.

He has had a very erratic season in terms of injuries, and his performance level in terms of points dropped from what it was last year.

Not to mention that cap space is very scarce now due to covid.

I think all of these factors mean that players that get moved only for cap reasons only will not be able to get their maximum value out of a trade. A team dumping an asset somewhere because they simply can't afford to keep his cap isn't going to be lucrative in terms of value, but likely mandatory in order to manage.

Normally Johnsson would absolutely fetch a 2nd. But in this tight cap era I think TOR should be happy with a 3rd...and I wouldn't really be too surprised if they don't even get that.

Or maybe the fact he has one 20 goal season hasn’t played more than 73 gamesin a season or that that one 20 goal season he had a career high shooting percentage by a lot.

There's a difference between trade value in the real world and trade value on cap friendly.

Johnsson could easily play on the 1st line with Matthews and Marner next year. He was a clutch player during the Calder Cup run, and before his injury, that had translated to the NHL. If he's traded I would look for an undervalued, less expensive roster player. So many options. 3rd round pick is not close at all to his value.

They don't or at least shouldn't.

In a typical year he's worth about a second.

But his value is suppressed as that cap is flat and people don't want to pay the middle of their lineup more than minimum.

He's been streaky, and has a injury history.
