Lafreniere and Staal

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2020
Published: Aug. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Think Smith might need to be added by the Rangers or a 2021 1st from the Habs. Value seems pretty close though. Danault is an elite defensive 2 center with good offensive and possession numbers. It would really hurt to lose him.

Not true when Taking back almost 6 Mil in cap space. Besides Danault is worth an average 1st OVA pick maybe not in this draft but next year's easily. BTW Suzuki and Romanov alone are more valuable than Lafreniere as they play harder to fill positions. All this BS about it will cost Suzuki + Romanov + Caufield + 16th OVA is just what FANS like to think! You really think any team in the NHL if offered an elite defensive 2C + A top 4 Defensive prospect + 16th OVA + a top 2nd round pick + take a 6 Mil cap dump wouldnt be all over that! Especially when the 1st OVA is a winger your insane. Fans like to think that 1st OVA will get them everything they ever need to fill every hole in their lineup but the reality is it won't. The Lindros trade to the Flyers is a perfect example. Forsberg + Ricci + Hextall + Duchesne + Huffman + Simon + 2 1sts

Let's put that into perspective a bit

Forsberg at the time was the equivalent of Ikonen top 6 potential but still huge questions about his game translating to the NHL.

Ricci was a Lehkonen type player.

Hextall was still a decent goalie but coming off a year where his GAA was 3.75 and his S% was .888 getting late in his career so more of a cap dump.

Duchene was the main peice in the trade and was a defensive specialist like Danault

Huffman and Simon were just extras throw in like Weal, Evans would be

2 1sts both ended up being 10th OVA the the equivalent of the 1st and 2nd in this year's draft in terms of player quality available at those spots.

So if we want to use that as a basis I guess you could do

Ikonen + Lehkonen + Lindgren (about as good as Hextall was at the time) + Danault + Weal + Evans + 1st + 2nd but that to me is more quantity than quality.

Staals cap dump negates the need for Ikonen and Lehkonen. Harris is better than Lindgren + Weal + Evans combined. Therefore the value of

Danault + Harris + 16th OVA + 2020 2nd + Staals cap dump is equal to the Lindros trade at the time.

There are 2 sides to this trade. You might like the value you're offering but it doesn't mean it's the offer the Rangers would except. I like danault too he isnt worth a 1oa pick , not any year.

You would need to have Romanov Or Suzuki Or KK involved in any package for lafreniere, something rather shiny, potential superstar check mark in any package. No body that excited about Danault even filling 2c role on rangers, you would need a potential homerun hitter for a 1oa pick, not a consistent singles and or doubles hitter. Not near exciting enough. Gm would be looking for work after being roasted by ny media.

I see Montreal's chances of getting the 2020 1st overall as slim-to-none.

Would think it would take 3 big pieces

1. Two high 2020 1st rounders plus Danualt (ie, get Ottawa's picks and package with Danault)
2. 2020 1st, 2021 1st and A-prospect or young player (Suzuki, Caufield, Romanov)
3. 2020 1st, plus Suzuki, plus Harris (or similar prospect)

And I'd think NYR would look to move salary in separate deal

The Lindros deal is not comp here unless Lafreniere says he won't play for NY Rangers. Lindros had refused to play for the team that drafted him.

This is not really true. While Forsberg was drafted ahead of his consensus ranking in 1991 (was a bit of surprise pick at #6 overall)...his stock was considerably higher by the 1992 trade (just after 1992 world championship where he and Sundin showed as couple of the best young forwards).

Also, not even close. At best, MTL's two picks in 2020 are #16 and #47 (around that). That does equal two #10 overalls.

More accurately, since they were both future picks at time, it would be similar to league's 5th worst team trading their 2021 and 2022 first rounders...so like equating that #16 and #47 to equal value as Anaheim's 2021 and 2022 1st rounders.

your insane.
