Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2020
Published: Aug. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this scenario, there are no teams willing to give up assets for Marner, so the Leafs trade him in a salary dump circumstance. They clear his 11 million dollar salary as it goes on LTIR and convince the two big name free agents to sign for less money.

Problems all over the place. Robertson needs to be slowly worked into the lineup. The 3rd line is a good spot for him to start. Not only do I not think Dermott is top-4, he's pretty incapable of playing his off-side. Whitecloud hasn't really proven all that much in a super small sample size, so you shouldn't really be relying on him. Finally, Nylander and Kerfoot. As I've stated before, for both players, and their individual games, I don't think either is really what this team needs. Nylander has proven he's a more-than-capable top scoring winger, but he does not hustle, especially on the back-check. Kerfoot is not what I would consider a prototypical 3C, and that's what the Leafs need. When Dubas went out of his way to spend big bucks on Tavares, he quite literally said this team is ready to take it to the next level, that hasn't happened yet. Brendan Shannahan had been so adamant about this 5-year plan, but really, nothing has materialized beyond some regular season success, which means nothing when you can't make it into the playoffs, let alone the first round. For me, the issue will remain with the management of this team. When Lou left, the Leafs made a conscious decision to go younger, go analytics, and try to find a niche in the new more modern NHL with flash, finesse and scoring. Oh well for that. So, you can make all the deals you want, but it starts at the top. If Shannahan isn't prepared to fire Dubas, then I think Shannahan needs to go. Let a new president step in and turn up the furnace on everyone.

Edit: Your sons a cool dude so we’ll just agree to disagree haha. Cheers mate

Maybe my judgement of Marner is over the top and biased and it started when I watched this cool you-tube video of him before he started playing for the Leafs which had actual footage of him playing from age 5 to junior numerous times and I really focused on watching his skating and foot work. I can tell you that I was blown away with this actual skill level and moves and understood whey he was nicked named the Magician and can honestly tell you that I have never seen a young hockey player with that kind of skill set and I spent a lot of time watching minor hockey. I actually flew out to Red Deer to watch him play in the Memorial Cup with the London Knights which was probably one of the greatest junior hockey teams and he did not disappoint and have an incredible story of how i got his jersey signed and who helped me and my son can tell you the story.

Had a very educated client in his late seventies from Toronto and die hard Leaf fan who went to Maple Leafs Gardens as a kid and watched some great Leafs teams in the 1950's with a transistor radio listening to Foster Hewitt while at the game who excitedly and with pure joy compare Marner to his hockey hero as a kid seventy years ago which was the great, great Max (The Dipsey, Doodle Dandy) who the Leafs acquired from the Hawks in one of the biggest trades in the NHL of its era. Max Bentley was an incredible, incredible hockey player.

Marner has not even hit his best before date and feel I am in the presence of greatness and especially when I watch some of his highlight reel plays. Do not care what he is paid because he is worth the price of admission every time he steps on to the ice but think he is even a better person and tremendous role model for kids and treats people right. Can not tell you how much fun and special it is to actually go into Vancouver and watch him and the Leafs play when he comes to town and head down to the warm up before the game with 4,000 other Leaf fans and then watch the game with half the building cheering for the Leafs as if its a Leafs home game as the atmosphere is absolutely priceless.

To be honest, I don't think that team is better.

Marner is at least as good as Hall. Probably better given the role he plays on the PK.

Adding Pietrangelo helps, but he's not going to sign for two years anyway. There are so many other options to improve the team.

Marner is better than Hall defensively, but Hall is better offensively. Plus he’s faster, more physical & goes to the dirty areas.

You’re right Pietrangelo may not want to sign for 2 years but with Marner gone, anything is possible?

Top 6 is worse, defensive depth is arguably worse but Leafs get a better 1st pairing, bottom 6 is worse.

For the Leafs to actually improve while moving Marner, they'd have to bring in 2 legitimate RD, not just swap Marner and Piet essentially

Why is the offence weaker? Hall is better than Marner & they added several heavy forecheckers To the bottom 6.

If you want to trade Marner, it won’t be for a great return. Dumping him to sign Pietrangelo is the best option.

Yeah I agree that the Leafs currently are not a gritty hardworking team. But the team I created, they are. Hall is an extremely fast & physical player, while the new additions (Aube-Kubel, Gauthier) are extremely heavy forecheckers.

How is Taylor Hall better than Marner? U good? Hall doesnt have a better 2 way game and Marners much better offensively... Hall isnt even a career ppg at 28 y/o most overrated player in the league
