We Need A RD

Created by: AlphaHockey65
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2020
Published: Aug. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Some thoughts:

1) Moving Johnson will not come cheap. Given Covid and the pens needing to cut salaries, retaining on Johnson probably isn't an option so as much as this hurts to say, I think he's staying for the duration of his deal.

2) This team does not look very good on paper. There are still holes in the bottom 6 but depending on what happens at camp, maybe one of Legaré or Poulin surprise and make the team (highly unlikely).

3) Montour would be a huge addition to the defense. I'm fairly confident that Johnson continues to play that 3LD spot and Riikola gets fed up and asks for a new destination. I would maybe move Marino down as he's able to somewhat cover for Johnson's mistakes.

4) I think Bjugstad spends the majority of next season on IR paid by insurance. He won't cause the Penguins cap headaches and he's a UFA. There is no point in paying a hefty price to move him.

Trades
1.

  1. Montour, Brandon [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I read that Buffalo might not qualify him. I think he'd fill a bigger need on the pens than McCann.
BUF
  1. Bellerive, Jordy
  2. McCann, Jared [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Not sure how far off the value is but maybe pens add a better prospect or pick
2.
PIT
Not Anaheim but I know he's going to be moved but I really cannot pinpoint his value.
    ANA
    1. Murray, Matt [RFA Rights]
    Additional Details:
Let's be realistic, what is Murray really worth?
I want to say at least a 2nd but the goalie market is unpredictable and looks oversaturated right now.
Would the pens struggle to even get a 4th for a struggling Murray? It's possible. But you need to get whatever value you can now instead of giving him for free to Seattle.

Makes a ton of sense on both sides.

Not to mention that it’s inevitable that Botterill ends up back with PIT and Montour was his guy.

I really would not mind the McCann for Montour swap at all.
The sabres have like 9 roster D, and I'd rather have Montour than McCann to add to this pens roster

I don't think they'll do it unless they're really desperate to shed salary. But even in this scenario, Bjugstad off the books next season gives them enough space to extend Marino

I unfortunately agree that Johnson will probably be around, but that doesn't mean he needs to be a regular in the lineup. From what I've heard, POJ is deemed ready by Vellucci. If Johnson continues to play over better options then to me that's a fireable offence for Sullivan.

Do you really need RHD help? Letang-Marino seems like a real good 1-2 punch.

Man, GM should just admit his awful mistake and do whatever to get rid of JJ. Everything I have heard about him is that he is a great guy, but buddy is a black hole. Now you have to drag a good dman like Marino down by playing him with JJ. Marino should be going against top comp, which you can't do if you play him with JJ. Also with Montour, that 2nd pair will bleed chances.

I think so. With Letang getting older, a guy like Montour could be better positioned to take more minutes and give Letang a break.
I don't think its ideal to run Letang 25+ minutes a game anymore

I really think it's GMJR telling Sully to play him to not plummet his trade value (even though his value is negative)

well its either he bleeds less chances on the 2nd pair or he gets dragged into oblivion on the 3rd pair with JJ.
It's pretty much a pick your poison scenario lol

Yeah I just think Montour is a bad choice. I would look to move that JJ contract somehow and maybe see if a team would take someone like Hornqvist. Find a bottom Rd guy in free agency, and maybe even upgrade upfront in free agency- maybe one of those Florida guys. I still don't understand why this team made that Kahun trade.

Oh man I agree. That kahun trade was downright terrible.
I don't think we should move hornqvist. He's still a decent player and getting a small return for him would only hurt this team more.
He's one of our main powerplay guys too

Why wouldn't buffalo qualify him? They can qualify him and trade him.

Letting him become a UFA makes zero sense at all, since he has value.

And his value is greater than that of McCann.

I would like Montour, but my issue is the expansion draft. We could only protect 3, so choose between Letang, Dumoulin, Pettersson and Montour (Marino is exempt, which is amazing).

Dont worry, it is a problem you wont have to deal with. Pittsburgh wouldnt be landing Montour for McCann and Bellerive.

Okay, I will repeat. It would be insanely dumb not to qualify. He has value. Zero percent change he is not qualified/signed.

This is a trade proposal by the Sabres SB nation:
Sabres acquire Nick Bjugstad (C/W) and a 2020 fourth-round pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Brandon Montour (D)

That would never happen. Pitt is stuck with Bjustad not that Botts is no longer here to pick up their garbage. 28 combined points in the last 3 season, and a 4 million cap it.

With a flat cap, that is going to cost Pitt to move him.
