Trade idea from a Ducks blogger

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2016-17 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2016

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ed Stein from Hockeybuzz threw this one out there, but admitted it was unlikely. I think it fits the Ducks needs a little more than the Flames', but it is a pretty damn good return for Johnny Hockey, especially if Calgary doesn't want to pay his salary demands. So I thought I'd see how it would work under the cap for each team.

For the Flames I just put Smid on full LTIR, but they could just as easily trade Wideman to get cap relief.

Terrible trade for Calgary! You don't just give away a 70+ point guy and not get at least a 60+ point guy in return. 70 point guys are rare!

If Gaudreau is truly seeking $8 million per long term. Even moving out both Lindholm and Rakell they can't afford to give him that much. Plus losing Lindholm hurts their D pretty much.

Why wouldn't CGY just give him the 8 million? You're looking at paying more for those two players, and defense is definitely not an issue for CGY.

While I'm not 100% sold on this especially with Anaheim's cap situation it is an interesting trade idea. Rakell had 20 goals last year and still has offensive upside. Lindholm isn't very solid and is still just 22 years old. On the other had Gaudreau has shown to be an offensive Dynamo. The question I guess is the two pieces Calgary is getting going to make them better as a whole than just having Gaudreau??

I would just redact this bold sentence before every analytics savvy poster on this site rips you a new one. You'll thank me later.

I don't believe in unicorns nor do I care about analytics. He's 22. Defencemen don't hit there prime until about 27. I'll stand by what I said. Rip on. Thanks tho
