Fair enough. Yeah to me Poulin is a NHL certainty, has a decent shot at top line, and is certainly a top six guy. Was dominating the QMJHL last year in his draft +1 (albeit on a bad team in a high scoring league) and his overall game is probably ahead of where Mantha was at the same stage IMO. So I think, while maybe he wasn’t a blue chip prospect when drafted, he quickly made more strides to become considered one. His name def doesn’t carry the same weight that comes with being a top 10 pick.

I don’t know if I’d say his overall game is on the same page of Mantha draft + 1. Mantha got a ton of flack as being a “floater” because he was constantly playing. That was a great season for him and I’m glad he won CHL player of the year. Poulin is decent defensively but it’s not miles better than Mantha during their D+1 to make up for the tools and offensive Mantha has. There’s a few players fan bases are high on that I’m just iffy on. I could see Poulin getting to that status for me but I’d just say he’s a great prospect for the time being. There are a lot of guys like that outside of the top 10 last year I really liked (Boldy, Krebs, Pelletier, Kaliyev, Robertson, Puistola) and some that surprised me (Tomasino, McMicheal, Brink).

Yeah I know it sounds like I’m a Mantha hater, but I swear I’m not haha!
Yeah I remembered him scoring b2b 50+ goal campaigns.. Forgot he won CHL player of year, thanks for pointing that out.
It certainly took some good teaching once he got into our system to coach the floater out of Mantha. And he shows how dominant he can be when he is using his skating and engaging. The offensive tools and physical makeup of Mantha are undeniable. The guy scores 20+ goals in his sleep.

It’s all good, I’d probably be more inclined to moving him for a solid LD like Sandin or Byram rather than another winger and pick. Like I said there’s definitely value in the trade it just doesn’t “wow” me to pull the trigger.

So what about adding LHD Pierre-Olivier Joseph to the same deal. That’d make it three legit major prospects of 1st rd caliber. And like Poulin, POJ seems close to NHL.

Wow I was infatuated with Byram coming out, like him lots, was really excited to potentially get him before we fell in lottery. That’s a good wow factor for sure. Has there been a Sakic/Yzerman deal yet? I dunno.

Ok so guss on the blue line will be great for us. Adds offense and transition and takes some pressure off hronek and seider and cholo. Hrs bad defensively but what's it matter really right now. Dadanov is a nice idea to replace the offense if you move mantha but it's such a shallow ufa year Idk how he doesn't sign with whoever misses out on hall. Arizona or Dallas or Calgary probably. I hate the idea of trading mantha but I think that trade has value and theyd consider it. I so want Rossi on this team. I know hes a Smurf but I dont care.

Thanks for input. Yeah I tried to pair Gustaffson with someone who plays a reliable style, I think Wings look into Carson Soucy and Edmundson as UFA backend possibilities too.
I’m also a big Rossi fan too!
In this scenario, do you have any draft favorites for pick 15?
Also, I didn’t want to add more trades to this scenario, bc I wanted to focus on the Mantha trade thoughts. But I’d expect these wouldn’t be the only trades, and we’d figure out a cap dumps for meaningful picks trade(s).

Rossi and Askarov both would be a wet dream scenario for me

Just trying to entertain the idea that it’s not impossible or shouldn’t be totally out of the question for Mantha to be moved. And trying to put my mind into what a Stevie and JR conversation would potentially look/sound like. Bc the need is there for Pens, Mantha fits what they’re looking for, and I think Pens have the right assets that would appeal to us. Maybe Mantha asks for too much money, or maybe Steve isn’t entirely sold on him as a foundational building block or isn’t his type of guy. Or more realistically, maybe neither of those things, but he ultimately decides turning one of our biggest assets into multiple top prospects is what’s best for the timeline of the organization since we’re deficient across the board, especially depth. I understand the need to stay competitive to help everyone’s development and also keeping our homegrown talent. But if the offer is right, I’m not sure I’m willing to dismiss it could be best for the team long term. Vs watching Mantha waste his prime and 30+40+ goals on a losing team. And I’m not in favor of this as a continued practice, but more of one off situation to hopefully help expedite the rebuild. The positives to keeping Mantha are pretty obvious to me (or cons to trading the big Frenchman), but I’m curiously wanting to explore the pros of a trade. And after I get past how weird it is to think about and then submit.. I begin to hate the idea less and less bc of the possible major returns.

It is a possibility that he gets traded but I will guarantee that Yzerman will listen to offers but he won't shop him around. There are enough teams that want him and when you start shopping him around you limit the amount you can get for him. By letting other teams come to you with offers you never have to put a price on him and you can say I'm sorry he is worth more to us than that. Now there will be plenty of people who say that isn't the way it works or that isn't a fair price but when you say you have no intention of trading a player you set the price and that is exactly how it works in business and in the NHL. A high school into to business class will teach you that and any business 100 class in college will expect you to already know that.

We aren’t shopping him. That’s correct. The scenario is GMJR asks for Mantha. What does Yzerman say back

I kinda like this trade. Would be awesome if Askarov was around at #15. Adding Poulin, Perfetti/Rossi (per the rumor mill), and Askarov would be a big offseason. Sucks to lose Mantha, but DET needs another few years before they can compete and his value is probably at an all-time high right now, age 26 and RFA for his next deal.

Thanks. It’s an unpopular opinion for sure but it’s very much the reality of the situation.
Pens probably add another prospect or pick to complete that deal, thoughts on what that might be?

Yeah it's hard to say without knowing what DET thinks of Poulin, and without knowing who will be on the board at 15. Maybe the Pens add another pick (#77) that could be used to slide up to take Askarov if the feeling is that he won't be there at 15? If #77 isn't enough for that, at the very least it replenishes the stock if DET uses a better pick to make that move. It's hard to really narrow in on those details, but I think Mantha is a great fit for Pittsburgh, and Detroit might as well continue to build from the drafts.

My response would be what do you think he is worth or something along those lines. Realistically with how busy these guys are they probable won't even answer calls like that and they probably don't make calls like that. It's more than likely they call with an offer and it's probably fairly low and it will work up from there but when some one does that on this site you have thousands of other people reading and commenting on it. People on here think they would make great GMs that is sooooooooo not the case if the users on this site me included were actually GMs the NHL would be completely done in under 5yrs and would probably take another 20 just to get people interested in the idea of pro hockey again.

Another scenario I was thinking works is a Carolina deal starting with Pick 13, Jake Bean and Carolina adds something

Bro what?
It’s their job. If you think Yzerman and JR don’t talk you’re mistaken. It’s their job. I get this site is hypothetical, but the scenario is not far fetched.

I’m saying what I think Mantha is worth based off of these scenarios.. essentially 2 top half firsts + sweeteners

I’ve also said Mantha for Werenski straight up to a CBJ fan today. Which was laughed at. Point being, I don’t undervalue Mantha.
