KapCopp Crunch

Created by: Barbs
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 21, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade Explanations

1) Ottawa acquires young player in Kapanen who's cap hit is higher than amount of cash owed. Would also be fun to see Kapanen and Formenton on a line one day. Toronto receives a high 2nd round pick (similar value to a late 1st rounder) and a little cap relief. I added Gauthier for Paul because I don't think either team has long term plans for them aside from injury call ups and Gauthier's QO is less than Paul's which would likely interest the Sens.

2) Winnipeg would likely be interested in adding some young defensive depth and I don't see much of a future left in Toronto for Dermott now that Muzzin is signed long term and Sandin looking so promising. I think Copp would be more the 3C type Toronto needs so they package Kerfoot with Dermott to acquire him. Worth noting Kerfoot's contract is also front loaded so his cap hit is higher than the cash owed which may interest the Jets. I added the 3rd to even out the value a little.

Notable transaction omissions

Decided to keep Andersen and Johnsson because moving them now would be selling them when their value is at its absolute lowest. Would likely be better just keep Andersen for the season and see if Johnsson can bounce back.

Justin Holl is still with the team because he looked adequate when paired with Muzzin but ideally I'd like to see Liljegren move up the depth chart and take his spot by seasons end. I don't think there's many teams who would want Holl at this point anyways.

The right side of the blue line is still a disaster but I don't see the big 4 being broken up this offseason, will probably give them one more shot so unless some team REALLY values Kapanen, Johnsson or Kertfoot, I don't any big additions coming.

I think Leafs would rather want Adam Lowry than Andrew Copp but Id be really fine with each tbh.

Taking contacts into account, I think the Jets would pass, unless they don't think Copp will re-sign next year.

Wouldn't mind Lowry either but I figured they would prefer a pending RFA over a pending UFA from an asset management perspective as well as the slightly lower cap hit

Neither was Cody Ceci. Doesn't mean they won't plug him in there anyways since the Leafs likely won't be able to find something better unless they're willing to overpay for it.

In an ideal world I would never want Gudas on my top pair but I don't think there's too many options to acquire a stud RHD without breaking up the big 4. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I think something like this will be the likely scenario to play out this offseason.
