Leafs - Big Overhaul

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 21, 2020
Published: Aug. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Didn't realize how big Cernak is. If that deal doesn't go through, they can sign Gudas.

This team would be TOUGH to play again. Crazy skill but now they have some crazy toughness also.

Seattle Expansion Draft I would potentially go 4 fwds + 4 D + 1 goalie in this case (rather than 7 forwards and 3 D):

Forwards:

1. Matthews
2. Marner
3. Tavares
4. Hyman (if he is resigned) - Otherwise either Mikheyev, Greenway or Bennett depending who is doing better

Defence
1. Rielly
2. Ekblad
3. Muzzin
4. Cernak

Exempt:
Sandin (I think)
Robertson
Can only lose one player in expansion draft. All players not protected are replaceable.

Thoughts?

(Also, I know Kerfoot for Bennett is an overpay on the Leafs end. But Bennett is less cap, plays a tougher style, which is what the Leafs need. Calgary benefits from the extra skill. Extra picks can be added to adjust the trade if needed)

Why would Wings trade for Dermott and Johnsson, when they could offer more than you for Cernak, who we would rather have in the lineup?

Calgary is not trading Bennett after his last couple of playoff performances. Kerfoot offer makes the deal even more laughable.

Florida is probably not trading their cornerstone big RHD defenceman for that package either.... He is their Morgan Reilly if you will

If the Wings got Dermott, Johnsson AND Cernak, they are having a very good offseason. Doing both wouldn't be a bad idea! Dermott and Johnsson are the types of players that can benefit Detroit in the short and long term. Cernak as well.

Detroit won’t trade pick 32 for Johnsson and Dermott. Both are solid but not worth the 1st pick of the 2nd round for a rebuilding team.

Kerfoot is more than fair value for Bennett (doesn't mean that Toronto or Calgary considers it)

As for Ekblad, totally get that. He is a top right hand dman. I have made a package before of Nylander + Sandin for Ekblad and a 2nd. In this AGM I wanted to keep Sandin, so I made it how it is shown here. Doesn't mean that Florida does this. But if I were Dubas, I would push hard for Ekblad.

Make it the Edmonton or Washington 2nd then.

That is assuming he will sign to go to Detroit.

I think I’m seeing that Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren, Nick Robertson, Ilya Mikheyev, and Pierre Engvall are all exempt from the draft.

Okay awesome! Lily and Robertson I knew for sure. I assumed Sandin would probably be on that list. Good to know about Mikheyev and Engvall.

I don't mind Dermott for SJS's 2020 3rd but more than that isn't worth it and there are to many question marks around Andersson to expect a 2nd for him.

He will be a UFA though. So I guess a little less relevant. (I assume same as Barabanov)

Ah, yes . . . a CapFriendly glitch, I think. I was looking at the Mock Draft chart.

It literally is. Not saying that it’s a trade that flames have to do but you would be foolish not to consider it.

As cool as it would be to have that ‘20 2nd, is that even possible?

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. It could be something like re-sign Clifford. The 2021 picks swap and then Leafs trade their 2020 2nd for the 2021 2nd. I am not sure if they can mutually amend a prior trade. If so, they would just mutually agree that the 2020 2nd would suffice.
