Semi-Realistic 2020 Offseason

Created by: Trevor31lv
Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 21, 2020
Published: Aug. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The goals of the moves made in this were the following:
*Resign RFAs (Dubois, Gavrikov, and Anderson)
*Find scoring help in a trade and/or FA
* Find a taker for Wennberg and a D man (not necessarily together)
*Keep the team in a manageable cap situation for the 2021 and 2022 offseasons when many core players are up for raises (Bjorkstand, Texier, Foudy, Jones, Werenski, Korpisalo, Merzlikins)

I feel like all of the resignings are accurate to what AAV the players will receive with the given term. The 3 trades and 1 RFA signing all feel like moves that could be made to me.

No from Boston. No need. If they wanted him at that cap hit they would have signed him themselves. They didn’t. Still don’t. That’s why they let him walk.

yeah, that was done to create some cap before when I needed it, but with the moves I ended up settling on, it wasn't needed. Probably should've removed it in that case. Maybe it gets done if Columbus retains a bit, but considering the end result I settled on for the other moves, the Nash trade doesn't have much point and would be better off forgotten.

Not even interested in him for a 7th round pick, pick a different team willing to take that cap hit in flat cap. Good luck.

Massive overpayment on Anderson tbh. If that’s what he wants he can get an offersheet and we can take the 1st and 3rd. No use signing a guy for that much if he’s going to play on the 4th line.

Just buyout Wennberg- it’s 500k on the cap and 900k after 3 years. Nash, he’d like get kept. He’s a good 4th line center tbh. Murray would probably have to go somewhere and we’d get like nothing back due to his injury history unless there was some kind of pick protection if he players like 68 games or something. Also Get Grigorenko on the NHL roster. He didn’t sign just to play in the AHL. Plus there’s an open roster spot for him.

I agree with you on the Nash move. I should've removed that. I had it in to create cap for a different addition that I decided against.
Anderson is worth 4 mil a year as a 25-30 goal scorer if his health checks out in the offseason. He's only on the "4th" line because he clicks well with Foligno and Jenner. He'd be getting a lot of minutes. I'm not opposed to a Wennberg buyout, but I feel like that kind of deal would benifite both sides. Ottawa makes a low risk move an to get a 24 year old that has some upside and Columbus drops the entire cap hit with a small chance to get a 2nd.

I can agree on Anderson if he’s the 25-30 goals... I’d expect him between 15- 25 though. Honestly it looks like we’re just throwing money at him saying please stay.

Also I forgot to mention I like the idea on Cirelli, but I also wouldn’t mind trading Bremstrom and a 3rd for Tyler Johnson. Then we get to keep the 1st. It would suck to lose Bremstrom but after watching him in the playoffs he just wasn’t a top 9 forward, too many simple errors, that’s why he was scratched.

    Lines I’d go with
    Texier - PLD - Bjorkstrand
That’s pretty self explanatory top line is the top line.

    Grigorenko - Cirelli/Johnson - Anderson
Anderson is a bull, let him be the bull, Cirelli or Johnson is the speed and vision, Grigorenko like to play on the outside. Anderson plays in the middle of the ice and let the other two use their speed on the outside.

    Nyquist - Foudy - Atkinson
Put the rookie with 2 of the most experienced players and let them guide him

    Folingo/Robinson/Jenner/Nash/Stenlund
You have 4 guys who can take faceoffs and all of them play a different style of game (mostly)
    Nash- Defensive stalwart
Jenner- faceoff guy and heavy forchecker
Folingo- honestly hes kinda an agitator, really good at pissing people off
Robinson- speedy power forward, LH Anderson with slightly worse hands imo.
Stenlund- shooter, he’s the wild card. He can be put on any line to help with injuries. Decent faceoff guy, big body and can he shoot the puck (potential PP specialist)

Yeah, I understand people are down on Anderson. I have some bias there cause he's my favorite player, but I think that if he is fully healthy he can be a 30 goal, 50 point guy like he was on the verge of in 2018-19 despite playing with mostly unskilled line mates and rarely seeing PP time. The big question is if he is 100% healthy. If he is, I think he's return more than the value of a 4.425 mil/yr deal.

I like the idea of a move for Johnson and I actually had that done before I went with Cerelli. I think the deal was Bemstrom and Nuti for Johnson. I ended up changing it though for 2 reasons. 1) Tampa may be reluctant to make a deal with the team cause of the last 2 years. 2) Johnson has a NTC that I don't think he'd wave to go to Columbus. I was trying to keep it more realistic so I swapped from that to offer sheeting Cerelli instead.

As for those lines you posted, I really love them actually. I like the trio you have together on the 3rd line and the collection of guys on the 4th. I have next to no knowledge of Grigorenko apart from a bit of buzz when they signed him a few months ago, so I just stuck with what I knew when I left him out. I'm gonna look more into him during the offseason to learn some more.

Grigorenko in a nut shell for you- drafted high and came straight to NA, never quite put everything together, went back to the KHL played on a team with Datsyuk and some other top Russian players matured a lot, won a gold medal a few years ago in the Olympics and decided to try NA again. I’m banking on the fact that he played with Datsyuk and hopefully that will help him round out his game a bit.

Everyone is making a big deal out of Columbus needing more goals... we have them, they just need to get on track. Atkinson going from 40-12 and Anderson going form 20-1. Heck even Nyquist went from 22-15, PLD went from 27-18, Bjorkstrand went from 23-21. The only ones who seemed to improve their goal total were Wennberg from 2-5 (lmao he over doubled it) and Werenski from 11-20

Bjorkstrand's 21 came in like 50 games though. Obvious regression/injury for Atkinson and Anderson. I think Bjorkstand is capable of 40 if he plays the whole year and doesn't have that slow start we're used to. I agree that there's a lot of guys that can develop/step back up this season, but I do think some outside offensive help is needed to take the next step.

Honestly, I'm not sure if a Cirelli offersheet is realistic. Keeping him is going to be a major priority for the Lightning. I suspect they match immediately and then work out how to get out of cap hell later.

Thus we could get Johnson for super cheap.
