blow it up - gaudreau and monahan gone

Created by: connorthehun
Team: 2020-21 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 22, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
BUF trade

BUF needs to start winning now before Eichel wants out. Monahan gives them a very good 2C that can play on the top PP unit. With Monahan, BUF's top 6 looks very solid, and they could make the playoffs if the defence plays up to their potential.

Skinner - Eichel - Olofsson
Johansson - Monahan - Reinhart

STL trade

Gaudreau would be better suited on a deep team like STL, where he wouldn't be the face of the offence. With Gaudreau, STL could essentially have 2 solid first lines. Pairing him with O'Reilly eliminates the defensive and physical liabilities in his game:

Schwartz - Schenn - Tarasenko
Gaudreau - O'Reilly - Perron

Dylan cozens is one of the best prospects in hockey. This move would be very short sided for Buffalo.

Love me some Gaudreau. But not at that price.

If Calgary still wants to be a contender, a Gaudreau trade needs to be a hockey trade, not a trade for futures. Unless both Buffalo and St. Louis lose their minds and trade you some of their best players, like they do here. Then it's okay I guess.

Don't trade Monahan.

If you could guarantee that within 1-2 years Cozens would live up to his potential i woudn't mind the buffalo trade. I think is is really risky though. He could be the next Mittelstadt and be the number 1 prospect out of the NHL and not manifest into an NHL player soon if ever.

I think selling Gaudreau right now would be selling to low. Thomas is an interesting up and coming player, but i dont know to much about him. The first would be in the early 20s i believe and i just dont think thats a good enough return for someone who was a 99 point player just last season and has 2 years left on his deal still. Im thinking of the Max Pacioretty deal and would want something similiar in return to that. A highly touted prospect and a roster player that can contribute and a pick.

Montreal ended up hitting a homerun since Suzuki seems to be working out great as well as Tatar being a star for them.

So was Mittelstadt though. 3 year guaranteed of a 30-30+ type of center is probably worth a great prospect. For a normal situation i would say hold onto Cozens and wait and see if he reaches his potential but Buffalo might not have that same patience with Eichel starting to get frustrated. They shipped O'Reilly out of town because Mittelstadt looked to be his replacement but they obviously regret that now. Tough situation for them.

Mittlestadt was overrated he wasn’t even a PPG in college hockey. The excitement around him came when he won World juniors MVP as the best forward, and having 5 points in 6 games with the Sabres at the end of the 17-18 season.

STL doesn't really have a Tatar-like player, Perron is probably the closest, as I don't think they'd trade Schwartz in this kind of deal. Thomas is the same age as Suzuki, and has already played 2 NHL seasons. He will almost certainly be a star player. The Flames could do a lot worse than getting him as a principle return. I wonder if STL would do Thomas, Perunovich, and two 3rds (this year and next) for Gaudreau.

As a CGY fan, I would really, really love to do that STL trade to land Thomas. I think you'll have a tough time selling STL fans on the value though?

Don't love that BUF trade one bit. Cozens could be great, but he's not able to replace Monahan for at least 2-3 years, and that's not the type of hole CGY needs to create in the roster. There are better options that allow the Flames to be competitive again quickly.

I wouldn't be happy if we traded Thomas for Gaudreau straight up. Thomas already outproduced Johnny at 5v5 this year in 3rd line minutes. He won't be a 100-pt player but still rather have him as a reliable, cost controlled centerman instead of 2 yrs of a scoring winger. Maybe sundqvist, kyrou, 1st, 2nd for Johnny but Thomas has to be off limits.

No way in H.E.L.L. Blues move that for Gaudreau. The past two playoffs, Johnny Hockey has been neutralized. Perunovich is likely our top prospect. You trade those for RHD and Centers, not small wingers. I like Thomas, but I'm not as high on him as some of our other fans are, but if Thomas is being moved, it probably isn't for a non-playoff performer. I can't see this one going through.

Hahah I'm well aware of where Perunovich stands in the Blues pool. I still think it would be worth it for the Blues, as regardless of what he could be, Gaudreau is a star player, now. I get the narrative around Gaudreau, but he had 7 points in 10 games this year, and has 19 in 30 playoff games overall. Seems pretty far from neutralized, his line-mates had more to do with the lack of production. He drives the game even though he isn't a center, and is an excellent transition player. That being said, I very much doubt that the Blues would give both Thomas and Perunovich up in any kind of trade.

I totally agree that he is excellent in transition. One of the best, frankly.

Im a Toronto/Calgary fan, but most of my prospect knowledge surrounds Eastern teams. Honestly havent heard a whole lot about Thomas but since most of the rest of the commenters seem so high on him ill take their word for it. Has Thomas played center at all or is he primarily a winger?

I think he was drafted as a centerman, but to this point has spent most of his time in the NHL on the wing.
