Dream Offseason but somewhat realistic

Created by: rvetter241908
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2020
Published: Aug. 24, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yes, I know the Devils are very close to the cap space in this, but you have a guy like Travis Zajac who is possibly retiring after the 2020-21 season, freeing up almost $6 million, as well as Cory Schneider who has been contemplating retirement, or even a buy out ensue, freeing up even more money for guys like Jack Hughes and Ty Smith.

W Hughes and Gaudreau in ur top 6 I rly think NJ would need a Tom Wilson type guy in there or maybe even Josh Anderson in the top 6 as well. Otherwise they’ll get pushed around in the playoffs. Also, Toronto would have a tough time fitting Subban in their D-core even w retained salary, and he isn’t the kind of dmen they want

All three teams say No. Ottawa might bite. But Mueller is probably worth a 6-7.
And you’re not going to win many hockey games with that defence

I can't see why Ottawa would be interested. They already have 3 LHD signed for next season (without Brorowiecki) and Chabot plays 25+ minutes a night as is it.

I see a lot of Pavel Zacha in Devils trades. Been trying to pinpoint his trade value... What is it? Just curious.
And some ppl have him as a 3rd or 4th line wing and some keep him at center. So what’s up? Oh and....

Mueller is probably a non-tender candidate. No one is taking Subban, especially not a cap-strapped team that views itself as a contender. TOR needs more certainty for the kind of cap hit Subban would carry even at 50% retained. I'll echo what AndrewLadd posted that this team is already too small, adding Gaudreau just exacerbates it. No way Corey retires and leaves $12m on the table.

I know Zacha gets **** on because he isn't living up to the potential of a 6th overall pick. But quite frankly, he has been a very solid two-way middle 6 forward, and this year proved it with his increase in ice time, assists and points. He has very good hands, along with pretty good speed, and is a great penalty killer. Personally, I am not too hot on trading for the guy, because he is still a valuable asset for the team, but if he were to get traded right now, and I say he is worth either a very late first rounder or an early second rounder, as well as a C+ to B prospect.

It's fine value for the Leafs, but it depends if PK can rebound. If he can't... that's 5.5 million for 2 more years when the Leafs can't afford bad contracts

Interesting. Yeah I knew he gets a bad wrap bc of his draft position but had a better season as far as his points production this year. And part of it seemed Hynes didn’t like him maybe? Then he sorta got a fresh start. Was thinking maybe he could use another one bc I hear how he is still a frustrating player in terms of consistency.
And I was thinking more along the lines of a hockey trade vs trading him for futures.. But I agree on his value, not in picks exactly, but in players. Bc a team would probably just keep their first or early second to draft “their” guy.

Just looking from outside tho, the Devils seem light on Dmen especially LHD, while the Red Wings need a center. That’s where I saw a hockey trade that could work well.. Cholowski was 20th overall pick in 2016 and fans are frustrated with him bc of where he is drafted. But the reality is he’s only 22 still, it normally takes Dmen longer to develop, and fact is he still possesses all the skills to become a second pair guy and run the second PP. And he’s on the cusp of NHL, made our team 2 years in a row before we decided he needed more AHL time. He’s likely ready to step in now but no doubt there will still be some growing pains. Wings probably add the C+/B prospect like you said. But yeah just saw a change of scenery trade that might work to fill team needs
Plus Cholo is still on his ELC , so there’d be cap savings if that matter to the Devils, I’m not too sure.

The people shouting about defense on here are spot on - I think the rebuild should focus on the back-end first. I'd be targetting guys like Cernak and Hanifan before going after Johnny (who I think is a bad fit in NJ right now - two years on his contract, NJ not in a competing window, size, etc). Build from the back, give Blackwood some confidence, and find or develop scoring in a couple of years!
