Pontus Aberg has been on 7 FREAKING NHL TEAMS!!!!

Remember when he had that really good run for Nashville and people thought he was a stud.

SUMMARY - ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS. #FireGMJR better be trending on Twitter at some point today.

At a high level, what I think this boils down to is a 1st and Hallander for Kapanen and Lindgren, and even at that high of level that is a terrible trade for the Pens. Warsofsky (journeyman AHL-er) and Aberg seem to cancel each other out. Rodrigues is a serviceable forward, but he couldn't crack the Pens top 12 in the Montreal series (which I think speaks more to Pens coaching than it does Rodrigues' ability), but the Pens weren't going to sign him anyway. So you give up a first in a deep draft and a highly-regarded prospect (18 2nd) for Kapanen and Lindgren? NO THANK YOU.

Go higher level... If you do Hallander for Kapanen, one-for-one, as a Pens fan, yes, I'd be ok with that (although admittedly I don't think the Leafs do that deal). If you do just the 1st for Kapanen, I don't think I like that deal as a Pens fan. No matter how you slice and dice this deal, this is a BAD deal from the Pittsburgh side.

At least keeping and drafting at 15, you give fans some hope for the future. It helps you with a quick on-the-fly rebuild a la the Blackhawks, not a crash and burn like the Kings or Sharks. We're heading for a bad time ahead, if we're not already there.

I like this trade for Toronto. Dubas gets pretty great value for Kapanen after a disappointing season. This is an off season where I think having extra assets and cap space can have a big impact. With a flat cap and players maybe interested in playing in Canada more than they normally would, I think you can probably replace Kapanen through free agency at a lower cost, so getting a 1st and a prospect with any NHL upside seems pretty good.

Best part about Dubas being the GM is he will find a way to lose this trade

You liked trading for Brassard, Hagelin, Pearson, Bjugstad, Gudbranson, and Galchenyuk? He's been a terrible GM for a while now.

Even when he makes good trades he ruins them.... Maatta for Kuhun.....amazing but then... lol. that Zucker trade also.... it could be a lottery pick. this team might not make playoffs if theres an injury/ they trade Murray and Jarry isnt an actual good goalie.... so many things going on here

I'll admit. I have been pretty critical on the leafs of late. But it's really difficult to see any way this isn't a win for the leafs. I fully expect Kap to rebound and become and absolute force, as every player who leaves the leafs seems to do, I believe they're selling low on a really good player. But even then, this is still a win for Toronto.

They'll probably not qualify him but will then re-sign him to something anyway. That's been done before to avoid paying RFAs too much (past precedents: Beau Bennett, Devante Smith-Pelly, Brett Connolly, Justin Schultz, and Martin Frk).

Certainly didn't happen for Cody Ceci.

I totally agree that TOR fleeced PIT here but I can't help but think TOR never gave Kapanen a fair chance in the top 6.

I mean sure I'll take that for Kapanen any day I would have taken just a 1st for Kapanen he was useless against Columbus.

This also stops Seattle from taking Kapanen in the expansion draft.

I honestly think that kapanen has 50-60 pt potential, especially next to Crosby or Malkin. He is also very cheap if he gets there. The pens were also the team that drafted kapanen so I guess Rutherford is still high on him. That said, this is an overpayment. Hallander has similar potential to kapanen and Rodriguez is worth a mid pick. At most I would be giving hallander, a 2nd, and Rodrigues. The top 15 pick in a very deep draft is a massive overpayment for kapanen alone. Rutherford must be very high on him and a little bit of something else

Why the hell does GMJR have this obsession with trading 1st round picks? Not to mention, Hallander was a good prospect too. Massive overpayment for Kapanen and I'm not impressed.

This is clearly a win for the Leafs and now the Pens don't a 1st this season or next season. Stop trading 1st round picks for bloody wingers and this isn't even a proven 2nd liner!?

Although Dubas is the one GM if it looks good on paper doesn't mean it's reality. (Barrie trade)
