Rodrigues is an overpaid 4th liner, Warsofsky is an AHL player and Hallander is a risk of not ever leaving Sweden.

Kapanen is reasonable middle RWer, Lindgren is an AHL player and Aberg is a risk of leaving for Sweden.

Leafs downgrade in NHL talent, downgrade in AHL player.
Leafs upgrade in a younger Swede, cap space and get a 1st Rd pick.

I know Rutherford is probably willing to overpay now if he can squeeze out one or two deep runs over the next couple of years but he probably could have easily found a better player than Kapanen for that package. Especially the first round pick.

"Not play for a couple of years" means "plays in his third year."

And would you rather have J.T. Miller, Ryan Pulock, Erik Brannstrom, Grigori Denisenko, or Kasperi Kapanen? And the jury is still out on Kunin and Senyshyn. Even if we consider them not as good as Kapanen, I would have taken the 55% chance on a successful pick and kept the first and Hallander.

And Toronto's big names are going to start becoming UFA's in 4 years. Their window to win is now and the odds of the #15 pick being a significant contributor during these next four years is slim.

You could definitely be right.

But I'm never persuaded by the "window" concept. Kubalik and Robertson appeared almost out of nowhere. Sometimes players surface that have an inordinate effect on their teams.

My first sentence (which I have since deleted, and appears only in your quote) was dumb. Your point about Larkin is well taken.

Doesn't look like he has any trade trees that big, his two biggest are combining the Kadri trade with Hutchinson for Rosen, and Combining the Zaitsev/Brown trade with Harpur for Salomaki.
His worst trade has to be the Marleau trade. Gave up a lottery pick to dump cap. He's only been there for two years so tough to accumulate something like that (although Rutherford did it in one lol)

I'm sure Burke has some great ones though 😉

My understanding:

1- Pittsburgh gets the better player in this trade; actually the only one worth trading imo. Typically, the team that gets the best player wins the trade.
2- Toronto gets a hypothetical NHL-level player in their 15th pick. Optimistically, let's say a 2nd-liner or a top 2-3 D. NHL-ready in 2022-2023.
3- Toronto loses depth at forward for next season. 35 points VS ??
4- Kapanen did not/should have fetched Toronto something they desperately need: a top-2 RHD.

Bottom line: PIT wins the trade for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons. After that, who knows...

I will simplify it for you.

The TML roster is worst tonight that it was this morning.

That's what @puckit means by:"1- Pittsburgh gets the better player in this trade;"

But go celebrate in the steets if you want. Maybe, one day, the 2020 15th overall pick will have a better career than Kapanen's. If that gets you going...

i mean this is what happens when you overextend your teams cap situation on 4 players. your solid depth players signed to good contracts have to be moved for future cheaper deals. 15th pick could very well land them schneider which is exactly the player they need. How ready he is to step up and contribute is a different story but he has top 4 right d shut down guy written all over him.

thanks man i can't read comments. good to know that by trading a roster player, technically the maple leafs are worse now. this is bad for the team going forward with all the games they have to play in the next few days.

it's not like they have forward depth that could replace the scoring kapanen provided. it's not like they have more cap space to sign players to improve the roster. it's not like they've acquired a draft pick and prospect for someone whose future production is also being hypothetically poised.

Well seeing how the window to win for the Leafs is now and the next 2 years. If the Leafs do draft Schneider with that 15th pick. He is 3 years away from being in the NHL as the next two seasons he has to play in the CHL unless he on a Leafs roster. I don't see that for his 18 year old season or 19 year old season to be honest. Just two more wasted years of having Matthews under contract the next two seasons. Need to improve the backend with NHL players right now, not 3 or possibly 4 years from now. Waste away the Matthew years before he is a UFA and takes off to Arizona wink

You talk like if Kapanen was a cap dump, that Leafs would have good offensive prospects ready to jump in and no more cap problems.😑

Cap dumps usually don't garner first round picks.

5- There isn't a guarantee that the Leafs gain the entire $3.2m in cap space they opened up because Rodrigues still needs a contract. His qualifying offer is $2m and he's a right shot, so it's likely Dubas wanted him as a cheaper replacement for Kapanen. Last year they acquired Ceci and then signed him for more than his qualifying offer, so it remains to be seen what Rodrigues will cost. It also remains to be seen what Dubas does with the 1st round pick. Trade favors Toronto, but it's not a clear win like people are making it out to be.

If Lindgren is playing regular NHL minutes when your team is fully healthy, you've got a bit of a problem. He isn't much more than a good AHL guy who could fill in for a few games here and there.

Yea, my question is more gauged towards does this guy project as a 6th/7th defenseman? Even if it's a year from now.

The Leafs may have won this trade, and that’s great and all, but was it worth sacrificing their morals? Stealing from a senile old man... where does it end? Shame on Dubas and RIP Pit fans.

Yes, you must have the record for most liked post ... if you don't, I don't know what to say.
