Another Offer We Cant Refuse

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 23, 2020
Published: Aug. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The main trade is an outgrowth of a series of posts by Vancouver fans seeking to unload Eriksson's cap hit without paying their 2021 first. I've actually added a couple of pieces from the Anaheim side, including Vancouver home boy Deven Sideroff.

I'm assuming we have no success in signing Dylan De Melo or trading for MacKenzie Weegar.

I wouldn't. Virtanen and a guy Seattle would almost certainly prefer over any of the forwards or defenders we'd have to expose, plus the second . . .

lets hypothetically say toronto offeres the 2020 15th OA pick what would the ducks send for it? just curious as if Dubas is looking to move it this is one of the teams he may talk to

Manson, of course

virtually any LW including Rakell, although I doubt Toronto is interested in Heinen or Des Lauriers

Guhle and Larsson, although I doubt Toronto is interested

maybe Antoine Morand or Benoit-Olivier Groulx

no 2020 draft pick

2021 second on down

I can, Virtanen is massively overrated and isn't much of an upgrade over what we already have, especially long term with a bit of development from Steel/Terry/Comtois etc, and normally I'd say Demko is fine compensation, but you know, Gibby exists

Which asset does that help us with, we're not gonna have to protect guys like Steel and Zegras, and tbh irdc if we have to lose a guy like Silf, I don't want to, but by that time the kids will have a few years of experience, and he probably won't really have a big role on the team anymore, so i don't think it's really worth trading for Demko just to expose him in the ED?

"By that time"?!? One season after next? I don't think any of Henrique, Rakell or Silfverberg will be senile by then, and we have 6 young forwards (Heinen, Jones, Lundestrom, Milano, Steel and Terry) right now I think we'd like to keep (unless we're offered a deal like th second one in my construction). Similarly, assuming we'll still have Fowler, Lindholm and Manson, they will probably be on our protected list, leaving Djoos, Larsson, Mahura and Guhle exposed. And we're not "trading for Demko"; we're trading for Demko, Virtanen and the second in 2021, all at no cost. Given that last factor, I'm surprised you're so resistant to this idea. One can argue about the financial aspect or the burden of having Eriksson occupying a roster slot, but I find other "objections" chimerical.

I could see the ducks sending Manson and a someone like Jones or Goalie Prospect. But Leafs would have to dump some salary too. I know the Manson "regression" but he is a top 4 RHD dman that Leafs are looking for. Holl isnt the answer.

We already have dead-weight in Backes and Perry's buyout hit, now we have to take on Eriksson too? The idea of spending $15 on those three next year depresses the hell out of me. We gain nothing we need out of this trade other than a backup goalie and that should be easy enough to accomplish with the many hitting the market in October (man that feels weird to type).

And from Vancouver's side they get practically nothing since Sideroff is a total bust and picks beyond the fifth round are basically useless.

It's not that bad: we'd owe Backes and Eriksson each $2.5 million. Then after this (next) season, Backes drops off and we'd only owe Perry $2 million and Eriksson $2.5 million. In exchange, my thinking goes, we get to keep all of our young skaters through the expansion draft and we have Virtanen as long as we want him, plus the second-round draft pick.

Vancouver gets much-needed cap relief, so they would be more than happy with this deal. This allows them to re-sign Pettersson and Hughes without strain in 2021 and keep Markstrom and Toffoli this year if they want to (and Tanev and Stecher, or sign their replacements).

But do we really need Virtanen? His presence just crowds the ranks with the slew of homegrown young forwards we have whom we're trying to develop into solid contributors. Plus he has arbitration rights which I'm sure Murray isn't keen about. I'd welcome Demko but I can't fathom why Vancouver would want to part with him before they get their starting goalie problem fix first. I get that they desperately need cap space and Eriksson is clearly someone they'd like to get rid of but this just seems like a lot to give up to simply unload his contract. And besides, I feel like Murray executed his one "Hey, I'll take that bloated contract off your hands for a sweet asset" move in acquiring Backes. There's only so many of those guys I can tolerate sitting in the press box.
