What I would do

Created by: leafs1967again
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 16, 2016
Published: Sep. 16, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Notes:

1. I put Michalek on the 1st line to shelter the kids

2. I put Bozak as the 1C because I see him on his way out. I wanted Auston to get easier minutes to transition and Kadri to settle in as the 2C vs playing vs. top competition.

3. I buried Laich. No idea if this is realistic but it is the only way to have Hyman, Brown and Marner on the roster. I can't see Holland being buried due to his manageable salary and OK production. I also like Greening to be an OK 3rd liner. The only value Laich provides is experience.

4. Many of my threads have had the boys trading Hunwick. This is unlikely to happen. I do like him as the #3 LHD and think they will roll with 8 D. Polak and Corrado will find it tough to get games under their belt but Polak I can see starting the season as #3 RHD and Carrick slowly overtaking him.

I like this, I think as Polak starts losing his spot is when he'll be dealt, I think brown will play with kadri nylander with Matthews and Marner with Holland but it's just my opinion... very accurate baring any sudden trades

Although Russia does not have the strongest D, Zaitsev is playing on the top pair and eating the most minutes (is on the penalty kill and power play) on the world squad. I imagine he would easily beat out Marincin for the first pair based on his performance provided he continues his strong play into training camp. I don't think anyone would claim Hunwick either, so he should be demoted over Laich IMO.

Be careful with that assessment. Zaitsev was in the middle of the pact for TOI in 2 of the 3 games. He will play top 4 minutes for sure, but guys like Markov, Kulikov, Marchenko and Orlov at the very least will not be giving up ice time easily. All 4 have the potential to outplay Zaitsev depending on game flow.

There is no doubt...no doubt....that Zaitsev, and Carrick are going to playing the RHD. Marincin (if he doesn't displace Hunwick on the left side) can play RHD. Polak and Corrado fighting for spots.
Doesn't really matter if Laich, Holland or Hunwick, are waived and sent to the Marlies, doesn't really affect the cap much.

If you really wanted to "shelter" the kids, why put Michalek with Bozak. Maybe he should be with Matthews/

I have Auston with Greening. Don't need two old farts with him. Greening can still finish.

Hard to say Carrick is a slam dunk to play. He will have to impress to immediately see full time play. Just like every young D man. He made his NHL debut in 2013/14 with WSH. 2 years later he was not full time and they traded him to us. Yes he had a good AHL playoffs but besides that his season last year was just OK. He is a 5-7 D man for this season.
