There's nothing in that trade that warrants giving up a 1st round pick.

Kapanen got a 1st by himself

Johnssn and Kerfoot combined are not worth a 4th and a 6th

Kapanen isn't in this trade. I'm sure you're not suggesting that Johnsson = Kapanen.

Also, just because GMJR is a moron and overpaid for Kapanen doesn't mean that other GMs are. Fitzgerald is still making a name for himself in New Jersey, he's not about to make a dumb move like this.

No, Johnsson>Kapanen. Probably doesn’t have the same trade value but kerfoot certainly should be worth more than kappy. The add dermot in top. I think a late 1st and a 4th and a 6th is quite modest.

But jersey isn’t taking kerfoot.

Have a hard time thinking Jersey would give up a first for just depth guys. There’s nothing amazing in there. I personally think that Kapanen trade is an aberration not the standard.

Kapanen is worth considerably more than Johnsson or Kerfoot. Younger, still under team control at the end of his current contract. Bigger, faster, more physical, more flexible player. People see the potential for Kapanen to become more than he currently is. That is not the case with Kerfoot or Johnsson.

Kapanen might be a touch faster than Johnsson but he and kerfoot are pretty even. Kerfoot can play centre and isn’t a possession killer. How is kappanen more flexible than kerfoot?

Kapanen is not a touch faster. He is significantly faster. Teams view Kapanen as someone who can provide speed and grit, agitate, fight, PK etc. They think he can do things like play with Crosby or Malkin. They don't think the same things about Kerfoot. You are free to believe that Kerfoot should be worth as much as Kapanen, but as Mirtle has been saying for many months when he talks to executives around the league they always put Kapanen in a completely different category than Kerfoot or Johnsson.

I would not be surprised at all if Leafs take a healthy run at signing Alex, and would imagine a very realistic scenario that Johnsson and Kerfoot and even Dermott are gone. Based on the comp of Kapanen, you should be able to get more for Johnsson and Kerfoot then what you have here. Not sure what Dermott gets the Leafs as far as a futures package, so he's the wildcard in your equation.

Dermott is the wildcard I'm not willing to trade. As soon as Leafs trade him and have added at least 1 RHD, they will be looking for a Dermott type player to fill out the D on the 3rd, possibly 2nd pair.

When I analyze the options overall on D and on the left side (because I think it's pretty clear now Dermott has a hard time playing his off-side) that unless the Leafs going to move Rielly, and are confident that they can go Muzzin-Dermott-Sandin, or they for some other reason bring in another left-hander, maybe Graves, who would be on my bucket-list as far as potential trade targets go, the Leafs are going to have decide what to do with their last pairing in some weird form of roster carousel between Sandin-Dermott and whoever they choose to fill the other spot. Ps. If the Leafs did choose to draft Braden Schneider, I am pretty confident he could fill that third pairing RHD spot, provided the Leafs are willing to work with the kid and go through the growing pains along the way.

For the last Time jersey doesn’t want Kerfoot. New Jersey is not paying that much for that.

Yup, and they are all wrong lol. Kap is going to disappoint in Pittsburgh, his interview after the trade is the same stuff he said this season and the same before the playoffs and the same last year. He just talks but doesn't have enough between the ears to put it all together.
