My post Kapanen offseason

Created by: Gordon_Bombay
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 26, 2020
Published: Aug. 26, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Draft:
23- Lukas Reichel, if not available Noel Gunler
34- Helge Grans, if not available William Wallinder
44- Daniel Torgersson, a bit of a reach, but I think he can be very good, but it is also a risk.

Trades
I think Johnsson is woth a late 2nd
Winnipeg needs to change their Ds a bit and Dermott would fit in quite well I think. Don't think a 2nd is crazy to ask

San Jose, I don't know if they would do it, but I don't think the value is crazy unrealistic

And the other trade is kind of more than when the Leafs traded down in the draft from 25 to 29 2 drafts ago, giving up an extra 3rd for it

What do you think?

In a deep draft like this one, Toronto would get more for moving down 14 spots.

Pass on Gudas signing. I'd keep Dermott for 3rd pair at half the cost considering he's proven to a great 3rd pair dman and actually has some upside.

But the European kid that hasn't played in NA is perfectly capable?

We will see. I would say at the moment, he is a better player than Dermott and I think he played on the right already sometimes.

Yeah, I wouldn't give up a 3rd for him either, wings rebuilding through the draft, the draft is deep and we can get a sick player in the 2nd round. Rather take a chance on a player in the draft then a guy coming off injury with a 3.5M cap hit that doesn't really have that much top 6 upside.

The issue with Detroit is that they are kind of an AHL team and they have 2 players in the top 6 that are actually top 6 players. The draft is not that deep. Every guy you draft that late is a big guestion mark. there is a tiny chance that he will make an impact soon, a smaller chance that he will make an impact in 3 years and a decent chance that he will never make an impact in the NHL

How would you say at the moment he is better than Dermott, what evidence is out there that Lehtonen can handle playing 17 min per night in the NHL better than Dermott? Because Lehtonen had some interest from teams this summer? Wow, must mean he's a surefire top pair guy!

Dermott played RHD with the Marlies fairly often. If he goes through an off-season, and a training camp knowing he's likely playing RHD he'll be fine on the right side.

It's not worth throwing away a 23 yo with potential for a 30 yo at double the cost to fill in on the 3rd pair.

The KHL is a better league than the AHL and both are not the NHL. But if you watch some Jokerit games, or the World Championship, or the SHL you can actually tell that he is solid. Plus, he will be much cheaper than Dermott.

So you've been watching full games of Lehtonen's for a few years now?

I've watched Dermott excel on the 3rd pair at the NHL for 2 years, and top pair/1st PK role in AHL before that. I watched him slowly comeback from a major injury that wiped out his off-season training and affected the start of his season (fairly typical), but fill in on the top pair quite well down the stretch.

Also Dermott will be much cheaper, younger, faster and has better potential then Gudas.

Dermott will always be younger than Gudas, but I only like Dermott on the left and I would not like to block the development of the Sandman on the left and then there is Muzzin and Rielly that are given.

Bertuzzi is definitely a good 2nd liner on a good team. Honestly Zadina may already be there, the numbers he put up on the team for the latter part of the season was with dreadful linemates. I'd say we're sitting at a solid 3.5/6 top 6 players.

I think Zadina will be a solid top 6 player

But Bertuzzi plays a lot with those other two guys.

I see him kind of like an Andreas Johnsson type player. Very good mid 6.

IMO and most other sites/media/fans like Dermott to get that top 4 opportunity with Rielly, if other options are not acquired.

I take Dermott with Rielly all day over a late bloomer that hasn't played in NA. Especially considering dermott's biggest strength is his gap control (zone entry D) which is not a strong suite for Rielly.

Dermott is pretty well Hainsey, but can skate and move the puck. Rielly had some pretty solid (regular) season success with Hainsey.

The thing is, I don't have Dermott

I don't think his decision making is very good, but I like him.

The thing is, I think the Leafs have the luxury of having too many LHDs.

You cannot trade Lehtonen, you cannot trade Sandin, you cannot trade Muzzind and Rielly.

So give up something where you don't really suffer for getting other assets makes sense to me

Well we disagree on his potential.

I agree he's the most likely LHD to be moved, but the only way I'd be happy with him moving is if he's squeezed out by a legit Top 4 option. Someone the Leafs have to protect in the exp draft Rielly, Muzzin, _________.

I would not be pleased if he was tossed overboard for picks with only an aging 3rd pair guy coming in. That's a waste of potential. And if he hits his top 4 potential, Leafs look dumb.

We agree on most things and you might be right.

I was more looking at the draft, as I really like the guys I picked smile

And then I did not put the effort in it to find a RHD that has Dermott value so I just traded him for a pick and signed an UFA.

So what I wanted to say is that I don't like a player enough at 15 (unless one of the top 10 falls to make a pick there. I'd really like to have Reichel and Grans (kind of risky, but he could become a solid top 4 RHD in 3 years or so

Zadina will be, but the guy scored 18 points in the NHL so far.

And Bertuzzi is more of a mid 6 player on a solid team.
