Look again... Dub is not hitting the cap today @ 36M for your forward... sorry.. don't deduct

HeadDesk.gif goes here

I'm saying we can spend to the absolute cap of $81.5M + Dubi's salary, so this is not a cap squeeze. Please stop ignoring the facts of what Jarmo can do. If he splits 11.05 between Dubois and Gavrikov (or makes small peripheral moves that get us to that point), Dubi's salary is a non-issue. Be smarter.

I agree . Dubas created this but not letting Nylander sit out the year but they all claim they want to WIN.

Would you take less money at your job if it meant a perfect work situation?

What would you prefer your legacy to be at the end of your Career?

A smile $110M in the bank and known as a good hockey player?

OR

B:0 $90M in the bank and 1st ballot HOF, Stanley cup winner, some personal trophy's?

Leaving money on the table allows your team to surround you with a better chance at success.

I mean, Matthews is one of the top 10 goal per game guys of all time right now...there's a pretty good chance that he wins a bunch of trophies and ends up in the HOF. Marner is 23 and has scored at above a point per game pace over the past 2 years, and will likely continue to do so. Also a good bet down the road for the HOF, if he can stay healthy.

This team *should* be successful. If management chooses to agree to these contracts, it's their job to put a team around these guys. Heck, during the last lockout, owners and management drew this ridiculous line in the sand saying "we can't afford these big contracts!", handcuffed the bigger market teams by putting in a salary cap, and then watched a short while later when Minnesota gave out two ridiculous contracts to Suter and Parise.

I repeat-This is not the players fault. Players should not feel bad because owners are greedy and GM's can't help themselves. I will never find fault with someone for getting paid.

Tell me more about how "If you want to win you sign a fair deal at market value"? McDavid-hasn't won. I'm pretty confident that he hasn't even made it out of the first round? Tavares-hasn't won. Also hasn't had much success in the playoffs. Eichel, same. Aho, same. Rantanen, same, though this year could be the one.

I don't know, I could be completely wrong, but long-term, what does "hurting the team" have to do with someone being paid what they think they're value is? If my boss comes in to talk about renewing my contract, why would I ever consider taking a discount without asking for the moon first?

Consider the fact that these guys are play for the first three years of their careers at a fraction of their actual value, and then spend the next 3-4 years having their contracts restricted by arbitration. They're tied to one team unless that team decides to trade them to another. Why the heck would they be overly concerned about "hurting the team"? Because they *might* have a shot to win? Screw that. If I'm Matthews, Marner, Tavares or Nylander, the amount that I'm paid has absolutely nothing to do with the contract I've signed. All 4 of these guys have performed extremely well since they were signed.

If there's anyone to blame, it's the group at the top who says "Sign here".

look at boston. they are a great example. Oilers went to the WCF i believe. look at thw Hawks when they won their cups.... players got paid after they won.. there actually a lot of examples.. players should get paid after they win ... makes the most sense.

If you think those players aren't good or don't have talent your a moron. Andersen came in after 4 months off and posted a .937sv% The reason the Leafs are looking to trade him is because they can't afford him. He's been a top goaltender his whole time in Toronto in front of a team that can't defend and won't play a system. Any team that is in need of improving goaltending is considering Andersen without question. As for thinking teams don't trade players who aren't generational talent bottom 6 players are the players who are traded the most without question. Few top 6 players are ever in play. This season I think finding teams looking for top 6 talent is going to be the issue not teams willing to trade them. Reason being dumping cap will be nearly impossible. Hence the reason Dubas finished that deal with Kapanen early and for so much.

We don’t want your unwanted players, sorry that I’m not sorry.

For the sake of a salary cap argument, sure, they're both paid as much or more than their comparables.

Re: Chicago, in 2010, when Kane and Toews both signed $6.3 mil extensions, the cap was $59.4 mil. That's 10.6% of the cap each. Both of those extensions were signed in December 2009, before they won their first cup. Not exactly a discount, considering it was their first deals post ELC. Connor signed his extension after their trip to the semi finals. They haven't made the conference finals in a long 'ol while.

As for Boston, looking at them today, they're all fairly team-friendly. Bergeron's extension was around 10% of the cap. Pasta resigned when he had .68 ppg (Nylander was .72 when he resigned, with a higher salary cap).

At the end of the day, my assumption is that Dubas was fine giving out deals that were slightly over the 10% range because league-wide assumption had the cap growing to $85-87 mil for next season.
