I agree that the Detroit trade isn't fair value for Hronek which makes me wonder, what is Filip Hronek actually worth?
I see Murray's value like this:
Max value - First Round Pick
Good value - 2 - Second Round Picks
Fair Value - Second Round + Third Round pick
I think the fact that he's an RFA push his value up a bit, but the fact that he is unsigned and wants a raise drives his value down. Add in that there are going to be a lot of goalies available in the next few weeks and I think the Pitt will get "Fair Value" at best. Timing is important, because as soon as other options enter the room Murray's value will decrease.
ALL THIS TO SAY - if that's Murray's value, what is Hronek's? I'm interested to know how far off the value is.
I think it is a good assessment on Murray's Value, the goalie market this summer is extensive and likely affordable, so I fear you're right that the 'fair value' is most likely, a lot would depend on how much value is placed on his playoff and cup experience. I personally am not as against Murray to Detroit as many.
Hronek is challenging to value, his offensive numbers are great, and he plays with an edge, dude is a real competitor. I think he is best as a 2nd pairing D who runs a PP and puts up maybe 40 points. His defensive game is hard to evaluate because his partners are, to be diplomatic, not ideal. I'd say at the worst he's the next Jake Gardiner.
Valuation is difficult because, a guy who is 22, is therefore cost controlled and seems to have a floor of Jake Gardiner is a great asset, and an overpayment would be necessary.
Fair value, similar age top 6 forward with a floor of someone who floats between the 2nd and 3rd line and tops out on the top line, or a top 15 1st.
Realistically, established player with higher ceiling or package including one of the mentioned assets.
