Some of them make sense though. Not saying all of them. But, it's the fact that nobody wants to pay the premium to move the guys with terrible contracts. Adding a B- level prospect and calling it fair is tiresome.

The ones that infuriate me the most are the ones with JJ involved.

I agree I want none of those players. We don’t need depth. We need 1st liners and top 4 defensive Dman.

We need to let the kids grow. Taking on bad contracts and ageing veterans takes away valuable playing time from said kids. "But, you need to shelter them!" We have more than enough capable NHL players that can do that. Loui Eriksson won't shelter anybody by playing on the 4th line.

Ottawa saves its cap space for other teams to dump their garbage, no?

I hear you.

Sick of trades that have [AGING VETERAN] to [TEAM WITH CAP SPACE] for [PICK] followed by ["ANY TEAM"]. It is pretty good reason to write the rest of the deals off.

Some would be good pickups for the Sens, others are just "Ottawa need to get to cap floor so...."

The issue with the Sens that I have is that it's a lot of homegrown youth, which is awesome, but not enough veteran leadership/talent. I know that probably sounds like a cliche, but just from personal experience, the Hawks had guys like Hossa, Madden, Huet, etc. to help put them over the top for the first time. The Cubs (baseball, much different but still applies) had guys like Ross, Lester and Lackey help get the their WS. You have to find the right guys of course, but I do believe they're essential to climbing the mountain. Guys like Hainsey and Ennis this year were good starts, but obviously even the young guys are still a few years away.

I mean I think the worse part is people trading bad player with horrid contracts to Ottowa thinking "they have cap space" and then adding a 7th from Ottowa. I love seeing trades where it's like James Neal for a 7th...

Fortunately, nobody is more infuriated by the prospect of a Jack Johnson trade than Jim Rutherford. He's not going anywhere.

But yeah, some of these players would potentially make sense, but it's the same guys all the time.

I've also just cooled on the idea of Ottawa taking on a bunch of cap dumps for picks and prospects. It's definitely a valid option, but unless they're getting fantastic value, which they likely aren't, it's probably not worth having a bad player in the lineup. I would rather see them use those roster spots for young guys and use this season as an evaluation year for young guys, to get a better sense of which players have a future in Ottawa or which ones can be traded or even exposed in the expansion draft.

I agree that leadership is very important for a young team, but I don't necessarily agree that leadership has to come in the form of old guys predominantly in depth roles. I think you can add guys like that as needed, but the Sens should be targeting guys who can bring those qualities, but as a guy who can play a prominent role in the top six or top four, and who fits the window for the team (in the 23-26 year old range). I also think the most important leaders are already in the room there, in Chabot, Tkachuk, Brown, Ryan and Boro (if he stays).

Yeah, I agree. Again, it's all about finding the right guys, age shouldn't matter.

I think age definitely matters, especially if you're talking about big additions to the top of the lineup. The Sens are building for the future, trading for guys who are on the older side makes no sense when Ottawa is still 2-3 years away from being a playoff team, and potentially further from being a true contender. Getting a guy who is 28-30 now means you're trading for a guy who will most likely be in decline when the Sens are in their most competitive window.

For a long-term commitment sure, but for a year or so once they're competitive or closer to being competitive that they are now, get guys who will fit imo

I don't usually look at Ottawa team posts unless CapFriendly's wonderful new tool is telling me that one of my three or four primary-interest teams is involved, so I wasn't aware that people were trading all of this trash to you guys. I agree with you. Other than Domi and Dumba, it's hard to make an argument that ANY of these guys should be traded ANYWHERE except as a one- or two-year cap dump in return for a first- or second-round draft pick (plus).

Glad to see neither of my two crummy local teams made your list.

P.S. After the latest brouhaha, I predict that you can look "forward" to a lot of Marc-Andre Fleury trades.

The worst is the three way trades where Ottawa is nothing more then cap dump of bad contracts.
