Fleury is not a backup, he's a stop gap to ensure Jarry doesn't regress. I get that it's an overpayment, but in order to get Vegas to retain, something has to give. Bjugstad does not have a lot of positive value because of his injury history, the retention is to entice Calgary to actually want him as a cap dump. Horny is a lot older than Bennett so the retention is to make up for the age gap. I get that tweaks would likely have to be made to make Pens fans happier, but the outcome is a stronger, younger team (I know Fleury is older) with cap flexibility. Hey, I took a stab at it. Maybe just cancel the Vegas trade, but then if something happens to Jarry, Rittich is the starter and that can't make anyone feel comfortable.
Fleury is a backup now. He was already slipping and is going to be 36 next year. The Pens are not a stronger team after your trades.
A team that is in need of leadership would take Hornqvist. Both Detroit and Ottawa would instantly make him captain. No need to retain or "pay" to move him. He should net a 3rd.
Bjugstad is a good player if healthy. If he is healed up he should also get a 3rd, no retention. If not healed then he is LTIR and not relevant. There have also been a lot of Bjugstad for Russell Edm AGMs. (same cap but $3M salary savings)
Murray should be able to net Bennett, 3rd easily, probably even a 2nd.
No need for the second going from the Pens to Calgary.
McCann could pull a 2nd.
The Penguins do not want/need Rittich nor Fleury. They can go with Jarry and DeSmith next season, and if that doesn't work, get a goalie at that time. Maybe UFA the following season. Getting Rittich or Fleury would also mean that DeSmith would need to be waived again, and he probably gets picked up this time. So your deals also cost the Pens DeSmith.
So your deals are:
Bennett, Fleury ($2M ret) for Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist ($2M ret), Bjugstad ($1M ret), 2nd, DeSmith
Legitimate deals would be:
Bennett, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd for Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist, Bjugstad (plus no $7M retention, no -2nd to Calgary)
