What makes Marner tradable

Created by: Gordon_Bombay
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 29, 2020
Published: Aug. 29, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marner's contract is structured in a way that they payed him:
16m in year one
14.3m signing bonus for year 2 (and 700'000 actual salary)

For the final 4 years of his deal, the annual costs are actually 8.5895m per year on average.

So due to Covid, there might be teams that would consider making that deal, as they don't want to spend up to the cap anyways.

What they got in picks could either be used to draft young, cheap talent, or to aquire team needs. like Kerfoot and picks for a solid D

Also, the Devils pick should be top 10 protected

Is Marners Salary paid already for 20-21 as a signing bonus. If so, your idea might work for team like florida. Marner for Huberdeau, less cap hit for Toronto and no salary cost with a big cap hit for florida.

Most likely not, bonuses are paid at the start of the league year and they modified this league year as part of the CBA extension and return to play program. Bonuses will likely be paid on the 1st day of free agency.

Not sure about the exact time due to covid and the season not being done yet. but it is 14.3m bonus that is usually payed in summer, then only a salary of 700'000 for the year.

The same with Freddie Andersen. 4m bonus, 1 million salary.

This is what the Leafs use to do because they can while others can't. Montreal tried this appraoch to sign Aho, with a lot of money up front, which is not possible for many teams.

Would you make that deal if you were New Jersey? I mean in the next two Covid years, they would pay Marner as much as they pay Subban.

or the one with Florida as one of you said?

Unless there's pressure from ownership to shed actual money being paid, I wouldn't. NJ just needs to keep being patient and build through the draft, so trading those picks hurts more than bringing in a player like Marner helps. They already made a mistake bringing in Subban for a pair of 2nd round picks when they really had no business trading picks for any players just yet in their rebuild.

Probably worth mentioning I also completely hate Marner's contract, since it pays him top dollar and walks him right up to UFA status.

In floridas case, you would trade marner for picks in the offseason. They won't want to pay him 9mill. I am very interested to see what arizona and florida are going to do. They are in terrible markets, do they sell off and start a rebuild?

I don't know. Subban was already less than impressiv when they got him, while I don't like Marners contract, he is still a top point producer. And the assets they would give away would probably never be as good as Marner is. I think Marner could make Hughes and Hischer in better point prducers.

Of course. I was not thinking about making the trade before the bonus (actually not 9 million, but 14.3 million).

Arizona really should not rebuild. I actually think they have a good team, even when losing Hall. They proabably have the best goalie tandem in the league and can trade Raanta for something valuable.

But I think actually quite a lot of teams should be in for Marner, especially if they can unlaod a contract

Marner would improve their roster, but would anyone see them as a Cup contender before Marner can leave as a UFA? They have a ton of holes in their roster that they'll need to draft and develop players to fill.

I am not sure. They are good in net, good down the middle and have young wingers that look decent. What they lack is some D help. Their cap space is already good now, but will be better when Schneider is gone

That's pretty much exactly why I wouldn't trade picks for Marner. They seem to lack a stud defenseman to lead their blue line, they should use their picks to either draft some defense or trade for it.

Bonuses are due on July 1st each year (unless otherwise stated in the contract) and the Leafs' bonuses have been paid out already.
I remember the media talking about it on July 1st. They made a big deal about it because players were being paid and there hadn't been any hockey played in months

Many TOR / NJD deals...and none are simple. These two teams match on cap space. But offers too often weighted down with 'extras'

Let's see some 1-for-1 offers, people.

Now back to work.

Marners was paid his year 1 bonus the day he signed the contract, July 1st 2020 he was paid year 2 bonus (the CBA changed after July 1st) his year 3/4/5/6 bonuses will be paid at free agency for those respective years. As of today Marner has been paid almost 50% of his contract value and is currently owed just over 8 million per year for his final 4 years of the contract, so yes he will be a very attractive player to teams with an eternal cap or can no longer afford to spend up to the cap in actual dollars, teams like Arizona, Florida and I'm sure a few others would be very interested in Mitch Marner
