The Real Plan

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 29, 2020
Published: Aug. 29, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A man can dream right?

"Parayko won't be traded" - Probably not, but in this scenario no cap is heading back and you get a blue chip dman to replace him and Pietro resigns.
"Calgary won't retain on Bennett" - Maybe not. But in this case they get the better player and a 2nd rounder and the retention is only for this upcoming year and they have the cap flexibility to do this.
"Ekblad isn't being traded" - That's fair. If he were to be traded, this would be a more than worthy package for him though.
"We need to keep at least Sandin or Lily for future defence depth" - I understand that, but in this scenario thew Leafs have the best Dcorp and potential team for at least 2 years.
"Clifford isn't worth losing the 2nd round pick" - We do get the 3rd rounder back and he brings an element to this team that they desperately need.

In this scenario the Leafs protect 4 dman and 4 forwards and 1 goalie.

This was fun to make and this team would be grosssssss.

With that logic, why doesn't Toronto just trade Mathews for a 1st rounder so they can make room

Kerfoot is not the better player than Bennett. Bennett has played on Jankowski's wing for the last 3 years and hasn't been given the center role since his rookie season. A couple games this year during the regular season when Ryan was injured he played 3C and did quite well, in the preseason before Tkachuk resigned he played 2LW and did quite well, and last year he got a spot on the first line for the last few games in the playoffs. Bennett has been suppressed as a player by his linemates, he won't ever be the 4th OA dream but he is far from bad.

well, because the leafs aren't clearing cap to resign anybody. Part of that trade ensures they get to keep Pietrangelo. If the leafs were to trade matthews or (what might actually happen) nylander to resign reilly, then maybe that's something they actually consider.

Not to mention the right side is bursting at the seam with star right handed Dmen. You have 2 #1's and faulk, + bortuzzo. I could see them moving one of those guys if the return was significant. idk that sandin and a first is nearly enough, but still, they have a way overcrowded blue line.

As much as I'd like to keep Petro, he wants to much for what we can afford. I'd rather keep a guy like Parayko who nearly does what he does but for half the asking price. I'd prefer him, dunn, and Parayko but the move to go and get faulk seamed like they already preemptively moved on from him. Besides, if they were going to move Parayko, there's plenty of teams that will bite and pay more than a 1st

Sandin has a lot more value than the 15th overall in this proposal. So this wasn't just a 1st. It's a first and a young blue chip dman. Who could end up being super valuable down the road for St Louis.

So Pietro, Sandin and 15th overall or Parayko. (now they can make cap for Pietro by doing a few other things, which may be their best option)

You honestly ripped the Leafs on everything here. Two years of Parayko is not worth Sandin

Somewhere around 9-10 mill. He wants to stay in St.Louis so maybe he'd give a discount but I don't see him running to a team like Detroit for 11 mill either

With the cap not going up I can't see him getting anything close to that though. He's almost at 800 career games. A lot of mileage on him.

Well if the contract is 7 years you could get the price to come down some.

That's what I was always worried with the Leafs. Rarely do these deals ever work out. If ever

The Sharks trade looks right to me. I’ve been thinking about a very similar trade. Johnsson would be a good fit for the Sharks right now.

No, he's not asking for that. His agent's last known ask was under what Josi got, probably 8.75 or so.
