Why? Eller got a good return, and he wouldn't have any use for the habs after he got traded. And I'd say that the 187 games and 96 points we got from Shaw was certainly worth trading down one round.

The Drouin trade didn't actually include a 6th and a 2nd, since those were conditional on how many games Sergachev played.

Considering Ikonen hasn't played hockey in a year, not sure about that. And Shaw was redundant for the Habs. We had Gallagher who could do the exact same job, and lost out on drafting DeBrincat.

Criticizing the Ikonen pick is completely unfair. First of all who we pick has nothing to do with the trade itself, and Ikonen did look very promising until his career was screwed over by injuries. No one could’ve predicted that, and it really sucks, but there’s nothing anyone can do. (Also, if you really care so much about who got drafted, we got Jordan Harris because of this trade)

And we only have one Gallagher. He’s also a different player than Gally, and while it obviously wouldn’t have worked if they played on the same line, Shaw was a very important part of whatever line he played on, since we didn’t have anyone like him on any of the lower lines. Without Shaw the habs don’t come anywhere near as close to making the playoffs last year, and Domi wouldn’t have had his 72 point season. And again, who gets drafted has nothing to do with the trade itself, and the Canadiens obviously had no idea that DeBrincat would be available at 39.

Who cares, WITH shaw the team went nowhere anyways. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but there was no reason to think that the team with or without shaw was ready to compete at all either way. Unfortunate for Ikonen yes, but it still doesn't make up for the fact that Eller WAS a valuable piece to the Caps winning the cup. THat's what hurts

By that logic, over 95% of all trades ever made are bad because they didn’t help a team win the Stanley Cup. And there’s something to be said about the culture of the team. Shaw was a great teammate and a role model for the younger players on the team. And it obviously is not a good thing for the franchise to lose all the time, as seen in Buffalo.

The caps would’ve just traded for someone else and won the cup anyways. Why does it hurt to see Eller to lift the cup instead of someone else? I’m happy for him.
