Right, Habs fans, can I please have an explanation as to why you think Detroit should do this trade? Mantha is our best player, we are getting objectively worse as a team by making this trade.
Our areas of need are future top end assets, and the best way to get these assets in a trade is as draft picks or players that are still prospects. The deals that make most sense for us are using our cap space rather than trading away our best player.

dude come on, you know that deal would get done in a second. Mantha is injury prone and you are getting a true 2nd line center and a legitimate d man, plus a pick both who are very young.....

Right, so can I have an answer to my question please.
Mantha's injury history does not constitute injury prone, his game has matured and he is fighting less, which was the cause of his injuries. His only other came from being slew foot by Muzzin. Being injured by another player, unless it re-aggrevates a previous injury (this did not) does not contribute to a negative injury history. It's not like whenever he has missed time it's been a concussion...
As for the players in return, theyre fine players. But Detroit is lacking quality. Quantity of passable players is relatively easy to find, especially when you have quality at the top of the roster. Whether the value is fine or not in a vacuum isn't relevant, because this trade is the absolute opposite of the kind of moves that Detroit should make.

As a biased Habs fan, I've run this trade in my head (and on here) a million times, but the biggest thing is when you look at Domi vs. Mantha with respect to advanced stats since they entered the league, Mantha is just dominant, leading 8 out of 10 RAPM categories. Knowing this, it means Montreal would have to pay a lot more than Domi, I'm still open to it and I think there is a deal to be made there since Detroit should be at least open to a trade, but I think the value of Mantha calls for Domi + Caufield + Mete + low 2nd / high 3rd round pick.

Please don't lump all Habs fans together.

This trade works only if the Habs #16OA pick is included and even then it's a toss up. There's a wildcard here that none of us can answer: is Mantha talking with the Wings about a long-term deal. If Mantha says he'll only take 2 years and then see what the UFA market offers, Yzerman might be tempted to take 3 birds in the hand. If Mantha is happy and looking to sign a 5-8 year deal with Detroit, nothing the Habs can offer would likely persuade Yzerman to pull the trigger.

Very reasonable take imo.... but I’d personally rather give up a first and domi and mete then caufield

As a hard-core wing fan you want Mantha? Send Kotkanieme and your 1st pick this year. Then you have a deal

Well, Habs fans that know their hockey dont make stupid one sided trades, so that why you dont hear about us. I gave up explaining people the absurdity of Domi vs Mantha trades after the 20th...
